The Differences Between Verbal and Nonverbal Communication.

Verbal communication is spoken while non-verbal communication has many forms. Nonverbal communication is different from verbal communication because verbal is voiced language, using many underlying contexts; while the nonverbal is presented using kinetics, holistic means, proxemics, as well as chronemics. It’s easy to assume that the only differences between the two are one being voiced, and the other not, but by explaining what verbal communication is, and what nonverbal communication is, it will help you understand that this is not the case, and show you what the key differences are. With verbal communication the only way to send a message is vocally, and the only way to receive it is through hearing it audibly. With any kind of communication, there is a prospect of the message being misconstrued. Verbal communication is accompanied by paralanguage, this can change the meaning of your words by the way you say them through the pitch used, volume level, tone, and how often you pause (Hybels and Weaver 121). The meaning behind verbal communication differs based on metamessages, these are a subtext that give an alternate meaning behind the spoken words. For example, people say things like “Let’s do this again sometime” when in reality they are saying it to be polite, instead of saying something offensive. In addition to metamessages, there is doublespeak, which its whole purpose is to distort the message, saying “downsizing” in place of being fired. Similar to that is euphemism, the only difference between the two are the aim. One aims to deceive (doublespeak) and the other to soften the wording (euphemism).
