In this competitive world, everyone is attempting to earn more money than others and due to this race they are losing their original purpose which is to have healthy relationships with others and enjoy their life. Individuals these days very much indulge in themselves and are not spending adequate time with others. Research performed by scientists showed that isolation is one of the contributing causes of depression and other mental health disorders. People have begun to appreciate money and fame more than their own happiness which is causing their life to be empty and meaningless. In the poem “The Desert Places” by Robert Frost the narrator encounters loneliness and isolation and talks about how it’s affecting his mental well-being negatively. The poem indicates that when individuals gets isolated from others, they compromise their own happiness as they receive the ill-effects of depression and failure to communicate their emotions with others.
The main character of the poem “The Desert Places”, the speaker himself talks about his life which is purposeless and empty, the motivation behind why it’s ruining his happiness. In the poem “The Desert Places”, the speaker experiences loneliness and depression due to his anti-social qualities and I suffered the same due to the bad relationship experience with my girlfriend. Everything looks the same. It is the unique time when the reader could focus over depths of his life. Nothing will bother him because nothing would take his attention. The narrator admires the view of it, saying “never settle less than lovely”; which means that the landscape covered with snow is something extraordinary for the human eye. This wonderful view introduces the reader into thoughtfulness about himself.
Isolation can be a somber subject. Whether it be self-inflicted or from the hands of others, isolation can be the make or break for anyone. In simpler terms, isolation could range anywhere from not fitting into being a complete outcast due to personal, physical, or environmental factors. It is not only introverted personalities or depression that can bring upon isolation. Extroverts and active individuals can develop it, but they tend to hide it around crowds of other people. In “Richard Cory,” “Miniver Cheevy,” The Minister’s Black Veil,” and “Not Waving but Drowning,” E.A. Robinson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Stevie Smith illustrate the diverse themes of isolation.
Loneliness can be compared to a coin; it has a head and a tail. To someone who is overcome by the constant influx of people or situations, loneliness can be seen as a sort of utopia; to someone who feels that they are all alone in the world, loneliness can be seen as a sort of hell. In these two works, the reader is exposed to the positive and negative aspects of being alone. Yeats' character desires to be alone because he longs to feel all of the comfort that lonesomeness has to offer; within his soul, the persona feels an intense desire to leave the fast-paced city and become one with nature (Yeats, 2093). He longs to go to is an island called Innisfree (2092) because he became infatuated with the idea of this place as a child when his father read him Thoreau's Walden. On this island he could live in a cabin, where he could grow his own food and experience all of the beauty that nature had to offer. Yeats allows his character to rationally conclude that he would rather be alone because his life is constantly being overrun by aspects of the city. Loneliness can be either positive or negative; in the case of Yeats' character, solitude was something to be treasured, while Eliot's character felt that loneliness was something to be loathed.

In the poem Desert Places by Robert Frost, the author describes the scenery in which he came across with. It was on a winter day, and the day was turning into a night. As he went across a field, he saw that the ground was almost all covered in snow. But then he noticed a few weeds and stubble on the ground.
Stephen Crane was a realistic, American author. He also wrote little bits of Naturalism and Impressionism. As a child, Crane was constantly sick. In fact, he was so sick that his parents worried he would not make it. After losing four children before Crane was born, Crane’s parents had reason to worry about losing him. Despite his unhealthy nature, Stephen taught himself to read by the age of four. Crane is seen as the most groundbreaking writer of his generation by many modern day authors. A major theme that is seen throughout Stephen Crane’s writing is the sense of ideal life versus reality. Crane’s poetry differed from other poets during his time because most of his poems were narratives. In his poem “In the Desert,” Crane illustrates that even though a person might not seem human because of their mistakes, the ability to overcome that emotion and not allow the negative aspects of life to consume the positive aspects is what considers a person human (Stephen Crane).
These lines portray that loneliness is merely a state of mind rather than a physical circumstance. Not only, but the line “I have found that no exertion of the legs can bring two minds much nearer to one another,” proves that while two individuals can physically be close, it does not mean that they are close intellectually (109). It describes how the conservative farmer follows traditions blindly and the isolated life followed by him. It reflects how people make physical barriers and that later in life come to their social life too. Where neighbor with pine tree, believes that this separation is needed as it is essential for their privacy and personal life. The poem explores a paradox in human nature. The first few lines reflect demolition of the wall, ?Something there is that doesn?t reflect love a wall? this reflects that nature itself does not like separation. The "something" referring to the intangible sense of social interaction. Furthermore "that sends the frozen-ground-swell under it" refers to Frost or to the author. Although the narrator does not want the wall, ironically, the mending of the wall brings the neighbors together and literally builds their friendship. An additional irony of the poem is that the only time these two neighbors sees each other is when they both mend the wall. The narrator sees the stubbornness in his neighbor, and uses the simile 'like an old-stone savage' to compare him to a stone-age man who 'moves in darkness', that is, set in his ways, and who is unlikely to change his views.

Through the lonely speaker, a detached tone is expressed with the use of selective diction, deep symbolism, and reflective allusion working together to form the meaning of the poem that hardships bring us to detachment from life because it causes us to feel isolated from others.
Loss and isolation are easy, yet difficult to write about. They are easy because every human being can empathize with loneliness. If someone denies this, they are lying because loneliness is a common feeling, anyone can relate. It’s hard because we don’t discuss loneliness or loss publicly very often, and when we do, we forget about it quickly. These poems contrast each other by speaking of the different types of loneliness and isolation, distinguishing between the ones of loss, and isolation in a positive perspective.
