Many would see family as just bloodline due to many television shows and movies; however, family is people who support us and we enjoy in our lives. When people mention family, many would think of individuals in their bloodlines. This standard norm for many comes from the depiction of family on T.V. For example, in AMC hit show, “The Walking Dead” many of the choices made by the group leader Rick Grimes, during a zombie apocalypse, are usually the best for his family not the group in its entirety. People can view his action to be appropriate due to him putting his bloodline first over the many other who are there such as protecting his pregnant wife over the group itself. I first understood the concept of family when I faced signs of depression. During this time, I felt as if no one was by my side. Many choices made range from not speaking to anyone to thinking of hurting myself. I regret many choices, but I had many friends who I has known for a while. I realized that many of them are still here because of how I view them. They supported me in my darkest of times. I understood that family isn’t so much who is blood, but who will support you. I didn’t know who could possible help me around that time. I did not speak to many of my family member because I did not know how to approach them. Many consider humanity itself as a big family. Family are the ones to support one in their darkest time and the world proved that true during the Haiti natural disaster from 2010. Many people chipped in during one of the worst points for humanity. They donated an estimated 15 Billion for their fallen brother (CBS). Even if no one knew each other who experienced the earthquake. Many came together and supported one another in which if we ask the people who experience the earthquake, many would assume they will be thankful and think of everyone as family. Throughout The Walking Dead Volume 5: “The Best Defense,” the group is faced with very tough situations. Confronted with the chaos-causing bloodthirsty zombies, Rick and the others have to make vital decisions on the fly just to stay alive. However, it is not always the undead that force the humans into uncomfortable places; often it is other headhunting humans that cause this anarchist state. It is obvious their chances of survival are far greater in a group, or family per se, compared to being alone. It is important to realize that after such devastation, the traditional family model will change. Instances such as death and collaboration would change the people you see and perceive as family. Along with having to readapt to their surroundings, the human race had to totally reconstruct their entire household conventions. In times of doubt, everyone in the group tends to stay together; however, when they are safe, the group spreads out. Nevertheless, Robert Kirkman visibly relates safeness to family. In The Walking Dead, families are essential in the zombie world because they represent the conscious difference between humans and their flesh-eating counterparts.
The Walking Dead is a post-apocalyptic television series that mainly focuses on a particular group of people who struggle to maintain life in a world where the dead now walks amongst the living while trying to remain sane. The television show begins with the series’ protagonist, Rick Grimes, who, recently in a coma, awakens to find himself lying alone in a hospital that has already been overrun by zombies. The word “family” is unique, special, and controversial among different cultures and ethnicities. As defined by Random House Western Dictionary, a family is “any group of persons closely related by blood, as parents, children, uncles, aunts, and cousins” (Dictionary.com). Although the definition from Random House follows the infamous proverb of, “blood is thicker than water,” my definition of family does not. Family is not defined or restricted by blood relations. In my mind, a family is simply a group of people, who loves, supports, and helps each other unconditionally, and endlessly. Regardless of one’s sexual orientation or preference, all families embody these common principles. Thus, a family unites its members through the strong bonds and kinships formed when people come together. (Great intro.)
Additionally, building this strong brother-to-sister relationship of trust with my own sisters, leads my focus on the members of my family, who has influenced my character more fully than anyone else. My Dad especially is probably my greatest example of all times whose character and integrity really touched me in various ways I could ever imagine. I really admired the way he led our family with great wisdom and counsel which helped me in my hard and difficult times. I only got to spend nineteen years of my life time with him due to his passing away while I was on my mission.

Without family in people's lives, they would not be the same people that they grew up to be today and in the future. When people hear the word family they think about, the ones who will help them in any way they can whether it’s money, support, advice, or anything to help them succeed in life. I don’t know where I’d be without my family. We’ve been through thick, and thin. I’m very glad that I have them for moral support, and can depend on them for advice. They’ve taught me almost everything I know about life, whether it’d be household chores, manners, morals, cooking, etc. I’m pleased to have a very caring family that would do anything for me. I feel safe and secure with them. They provide me with the basic necessities such as food, water, and a roof over my head. I would consider all of the things they provide me with as luxuries, because not everyone has a comfortable place to reside in, or food to eat. If I didn’t have these basic necessities, then it would be another thing I would have to stress about in life. Despite what some people believe, there is no such thing as a perfect family. All families have their faults and sometimes it’s enough to tear a family apart, but if all of the members of a family care for one another and are willing to go the extra mile to help each other, then it’s good enough.
