Holly Golightly is one of the most interesting and complicating characters that can ever be written about. She doesn't even know her own self. Holly thinks that she is independent and self reliant. "I've taken care of myself for a long time."(p.27) Even OJ Berman (her agent) knew that she was full of her self. "She isn't a phony, she's a real phony. She believes all this crap she believes." (p.30) Holly also used to steal things, which she thought was a way of being independent and survival.
No matter what she thinks or does, shoplifting is not a healthy lifestyle, but a dependable life style. "I used to steal, I mean I had to." (p.55)She is not independent, but dependent. She is very promiscuous and shallow because she only uses men for their money, like Rusty Trawler. She used Rusty Trawler for his money because he was supposedly the 6th richest man in America. Holly later finds out that he is broke and is buried in debt, and because of that she doesn't want anything to do with him anymore. Even though she believes that she is independent, she unknowingly admitted that she wanted to use Rusty Trawler.
"You can make yourself love anybody." (p.41) She also even puts down women, even though she says "I've got him on my hands he's harmless, he thinks girls are dolls literally." (p.43) She would do anything for money, even visit criminals in jail (Sally Tomato) just for money. A modern woman or a woman of today would not be caught dead acting like Holly. A 90's women is only dependent on herself, because women now get equal opportunities and rights for everything. Even in the workplace now too. Another thing that differs in a modern woman, is the rate of single women who got divorced.
A divorce was almost unheard of in the 1960's unless there was truly a good reason. Today, women work for themselves, make their own money and raise a child all by them selves.
I read that 1.6 out of 1,000 people were divorced in the 1930s. Wildcatters, rig builders, roustabouts, and others rushed into oil fields looking for work. That meant that oil workers had to leave their wives with the children for months and months at a time. That is why the divorce rates were very high in the 1930s. Husbands would move away to go to work and not bring any of the family. Most of the times husbands or wives would file a divorce so they could focus on their job instead of their family.
With the beginnings of the cold war the media and propaganda machine was instrumental in the idea of the nuclear family and how that made America and democracy superior to the “evils” of the Soviet Union and Communism; with this in mind the main goal of the 50’s women was to get married. The women of the time were becoming wives in their late teens and early twenties. Even if a women went to college it was assumed that she was there to meet her future husband. Generally a woman’s economic survival was dependent on men and employment opportunities were minimal.
Seeing Helen from the beginning, and the way she dresses, and the house she lived in, you would think she came from a wealthy family and has been raised to dress very elegant like, when in reality it’s the total opposite. Before Charles, Helen was raised in what you call a “ghetto” neighborhood. Her mother is a christian lady but her grandmother would not be scared to run over a human being. They have a two story frame home and associate with many people regardless of who they are and where they come from. You can assume Helen has a high school education seeing that she can read, write and spell. Helen has no work experience because she has been dependant on Charles. Because Charles pampered her with what she wanted, abused her and treated her with disrespect, she has changed her ways. Helen learns to work for what she wants, stand up for herself, keep her guard up even when not needed and not put up with any disrespect.
There is a huge difference between life in the United States as it is today and in the 1950s/1960s. The greatest change is the way in which people lived back then verses how they live today and there are many things that influence these changes. For example, after World War II ended, there was a large increase in childbirth throughout the United States. As a result of this, many Americans moved to the suburbs in hopes of a better life. This would create not only more job opportunities, but some leisure as well. There also has been a significant change in the roles that both men and women played in society in the 1950s/1960s verses today. For instance, women are no longer looked upon as just a “House Wife”. Back in the 1950s/1960s, after a woman started a family her main job was to take care of the household while the men
...ce there may be a possibility of a remarriage that changes the family structure. Remarried families may consist of multiple layers of a stepparent, or children that are from the previous marriage. Since divorce is becoming too common, people have become more acceptable of divorce than a few generations ago. Based on Gallup’s poll conducted May of last year 2013, older Americans are changing their moral attitude towards divorce. “The overall change in Americans' opinions on divorce is also largely a result of shifting views of those who are 55 and older.” When people are exposed to a divorce people will later on adapt to this concept. Whether it is redefining family composition in a negative or positive aspect, divorce has become socially accepted.
The "D" word, meaning divorce was not a common thing of the 1950's. Most teenagers of the fifties had no such idea of what divorce even meant. As we develop more and more into the twenty-first century, teens are more adapt to a single parent surrounding. Very much unlike the fifties te...
One of the biggest changes in American families has been divorce and the single-parent families. In the article “What is a Family?”, Pauline Irit Erera argues that after World War 11, is when the major changes in families begun. Women were already accustomed to having jobs and working while their men were away during the war, and when the men all came back is when things started to change. Erera says, “The movement for gender equality led to increased employment opportunities for women, while at the same time declining wage rates for unskilled male workers made them less desirable marriage partners.” (Ere...
she was pretty and that was everything” (225). This captivation with herself along with the constant looking in the mirrors and thinking her mother was only pestering her all the time because her mother’s own good looks were long gone by now (225) shows a sign of immaturity because she believes everything revolves around whether or not someo...

The 1950s was a time when American life seemed to be in an ideal model for what family should be. People were portrayed as being happy and content with their lives by the meadia. Women and children were seen as being kind and courteous to the other members of society while when the day ended they were all there to support the man of the house. All of this was just a mirage for what was happening under the surface in the minds of everyone during that time as seen through the women, children, and men of this time struggled to fit into the mold that society had made for them.
The 1950s nuclear family differed from previous conceptions of the family in America. Of course, circumscribed gender roles were not new; they had always been around and were particularly reinforced during Victorian times. But the definition of the nuclear family in the 1950s went beyond the concept of the breadwinner husband and homemaker wife. Men found in demeaning for their wives to be working. Women who were in the workforce left because of this concept and fulfill the dreams of motherhood, which required the women’s full-time attention. For the first time in history, Americans were expected to find all their satisfaction and pleasure in the home.
In the early 1900’s divorce rates were low and you could not get a divorce without showing significant proof of abuse, abandonment, or adultery. In the nineteenth century, society individuals did not think too much about the importance of love and compassion in a marriage. It was
The only reason a person does not succeed at anything in life, is because of how they perceive themselves, by allowing their insecurities to get the best of them. Garth’s relationship with Cheryl failed because he allowed his perceptions of how his friends would view him to get in
Divorce is another thing that was like “illegal” 50 years ago. Divorce is tragic for the children in the family today and causes the children to hate both or one of the parents. Divorce causes total chaos. This may result in the children to be neglected because single parents need to work to support themselves and their children. Thus, causing no guidance for a growing child. Losing touch with family ties have caused a lot of trouble and will continue to cause more.
The first cause of increased divorce rates is because of women completely changing their household status. In past generations, men had to earn all the money for the family expenses. Women primarily took care of the home and focused on raising the children. They usually did not contribute financially to the family causing them to depend on ...
