It doesn’t matter their age, gender, who and what they like, color of their skin, whether they are human or animals they deserve the right to be, who they want to be and not have consequences for doing it. It involves ideas like protests and petitions. A true story about activism is an 8th grader named Laurie Wolff who was upset that all of her classmates who had refused to do the animal dissections were failing the class. She had a smart idea and collected signatures from anyone who agreed with her on a petition and then testified in front of the Las Vegas School Board, urging that students should be given the option to do either a virtual dissection on the computer or do a live dissection. The school district responded by adopting and accepting the policy. Activism means fighting for what they believe is important and includes direct action to get a point across to stop it.
In particular there are many groups of people who need to fight for their rights from the past like slaves and women who had no rights to gaining them to present like immigrants who fight for their right to be in America to the future, which could be so many options like abortions illegal or legal. It doesn’t matter whether they are alive at the moment or not even on the earth yet like pregnancies they should deserve the right to live too because they are part of life now. People are marching in the streets, some holding signs, reading slogans that help defend the rights of the discriminated. This happened in both the African American Civil Rights Movement and in the Women’s Liberation movement. Two movements, one cause; to get equal rights. In the African American’s case, they were discriminated against due to their race. They were oppressed by the Jim Crow laws that were molding a unequal lifestyle for the blacks. Women’s Liberation, however, was about women who were forced to stay at home, because that is where people thought they belonged. Women were also granted unfair wages as compared to men. Black Lives Matter. Women’s Marches. In today’s society, we need not look far to see various examples of civil disobedience. Yet, there is still much opposition on the people’s right to speak up - to fight for their rights. Why is this so, when our country seems to have evolved into what it is today, precisely because of it? It is my firm belief that while the United States of America remains a free society - a democracy run by the people - the protesting of unjust laws and traditions will always have a uniquely positive impact in the country.
Merriam-Webster’s Online Dictionary (n.d) defines activism as “a doctrine or practice that emphasizes direct vigorous action especially in support of or opposition to one side of a controversial issue” I chose activism because it shows that they were passionate about help the disable students. The most important statement or line in the article is “Disability studies theory insists that the “problem” with disability is not in the person, but in the environment” (Cory et al., 2010, p. 35). I find this statement really interesting and true. The environment needs to accommodate the person with the disability instead of the person accommodating the environment. Protesting can change political views, help society, stop government actions, and most importantly save lives. Protests are normally started by a person or people wanting to make a change and stand up for what they believe in. People have been protesting for years because it is effective.

Restraint and Activism Judicial activism is loosely defined as decisions or judgements handed down by judges that take a broad interpretation of the constitution. It is a decision that is more of a reflection of how the judge thinks the law should be interpreted, rather than how the law has or was intended to be interpreted. There are many examples of judicial activism; examples include the opinions of Sandra Day O'Connor in the Lynch v. Donnelly and the Wallace v. Jaffree trials. Sandra Day argues for the changing of the First Amendment's ban on "establishment" of religion into a ban on "endorsement" of religion. Others include the U.S. v. Kinder, where Congress passed legislation that would require a minimum sentence for persons caught distributing more than 10 grams of cocaine.
Many people say they want to change the world but never take any real action to make it happen. I however try to make it happen every day whether it be through my volunteer work, tutoring or simply helping anyone in need. Probably more obviously than not one of the most powerful and well-known protest movements of the 1960s was the Civil Rights movement. The civil rights movement was a social movement in the United States, which had a goal of ending racial segregation and discrimination against African Americans. People wanted to desegregate schools and other public places, reverse the former policy “separate but equal”, give African Americans access to jobs and proper housing, and give people a sense of overall equality in general. To accomplish these goals protesters used multiple strategies of protesting. These include, but are not limited to, court cases, sit ins, boycotts, non violent protests and marches.
Over 4,124,543 people in America have participated in protests. Since so many people across the country participate in these rallies, one may ask why they protest. They do it for many different reasons. People protest to end injustices, to support a cause, to make their views be heard, to be patriotic, and to help humanity. Protests are effective when many people come together and strike, forcing the government to take action.
This summer if you were on social media you heard about the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. The concept was simple, just film yourself dumping a bucket of ice water over your head, challenge your friends to do the same, and donate ten dollars to the ALS Association. Opt out and donate one hundred dollars (Madison). Many Americans did not know what ALS was and by putting this challenge on social media has brought tons awareness to this devastating disease.
