“The Farmer’s Children” by Elizabeth Bishop tells the story of a simple farmer’s family and the untimely death of two members of the family. Whenever the farmer left to go to town his sons, Cato and Emerson, were left to take guard the barn that contained expensive equipment. However, on one fateful night when the sons had such responsibility and the weather was increasingly cold their step-mother wouldn’t give them anything to keep warm. When they arrived to the barn they were cold and eventually had to spend the night in the cold without any warmth.The next day,when their father seached for them in the barn, he sees his sons frozen to death in the barn.In “The Farmer’s Chilldren” Bishop uses techniques such as allusion, foreshadowing and symbolism to explore the idea of neglect on the parents part and how their actions lead to the death of Cato and Emerson. Bishop often alluded the negligence of the parents by comparing the story to a famous fairy tale: “Hansel and Grethel”. Cato and Emerson had to live with their rather cruel stepmother quite similar to Hansel and Grethel, who had an unloving stepmother. The stepmother of “The Farmer’s Children” was often described as being “... romantic and overgenerous, to her own children” while also acting rather cruely to her step children whenever they did a simple mistake. Likewise, Hansel and Grethel’s stepmother also didn’t love her step children and even wanted to get rid of them by leaving the children in the forest so that they won’t return back home. Their stepmother was considered cruel since she even called Hansel and Grethel “naughty children” for staying in the forest even though she was whom abandoned them their. Given all theses points one can notice the meaning of Elizabeth Bishop’s “The Farmer’s Children” as a story of how the negligence of parents towards their children could greatly affect them. Although it is rare the outcome would be death Bishop is showing how important it is to properly take of children and how at all times warmth and a caring nature should be shown to them. In society, many parent neglect or don’t show their children enough attention and that could lead to many problems as the child grows up. The same could have happened to Cato and Emerson except their parents lead to something much more serious: their death. In fact if the parents had bothered to actually take care of Cato and Emerson it would be possible that they wouldn’t have to suffer such a tragic ending as being frozen to death.
The children also argue with their mother often. The children think that their mother, with no doubt, will be perfect. They idealize their mothers as angel who will save them from all their problems, which the mothers actually never do. The poems contain similar conflicts, settings, and themes that are essential in helping the reader understand the heartfelt feelings the authors have for their fathers. With the authors of the three poems all living the gust of their life in the 1900’s, their biographical will be similar and easier to connect with each other.

However many times the children were left to their own devices to manage their lives, the children always welcomed Rex and Rose Mary back into their open hearts. This can be explained in part by a hidden rule of poverty being that people are possessions. In Ruby Payne’s A Framework for Understanding Poverty, she explains, “In poverty people are possessions, and people can rely only on each other” (Payne, p. 23). The Walls children relied on their parents to hold the family together, if only in a physical sense. Jeanette and her siblings forgave their irresponsible parents repeatedly. This teaches an important message to readers: by forgiving others you free yourself of festering anger, bitterness, and judgments.
An example of the cycle followed by her father, his father, and his father before him is told when Blunt recalls a major blizzard in December 1964 that trapped the family and some neighbors in their small homestead. She unemotionally describes how her father simply proceeded to go through the motions of keeping the pipes from freezing, calmly accepting the fact that he could do nothing as the storm progressed and he could not prevent loss of a of their livestock. Or how when he first ventured out to check on the animals in their nearby barn and nearly lost his way back in whiteout conditions. Later, when the storm passed, she told of playing amongst the frozen corpses of the cattle, jumping from ribcage to ribcage, daring her older brother and sister to cut off pieces of the animals, all with the calm acceptance that this was so normal, nothing strange about it.
In a normal functioning family, both parent and child care for and love one another, and display these feelings. A parent is required to nurture his or her child and assure that the child feels loved by spending time together, and by giving the child sufficient attention. However, there are often times when a parent is unable to fulfill these requirements, which can ultimately have damaging effects on the child. A child who is neglected by his or her parents “perceives the world as a hostile and uncaring place. In addition to this negative perception of the world, the neglect a child faces affects later interaction with his or her peers, prompting the child to become anxious and overly withdrawn” (Goldman). This neglectful type of parenting proves to be a pattern in the novel Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood, as the main characters, Jimmy, Crake, and Oryx are crucially affected by their parents’ choices and are unjustly abandoned by them. In this novel, the neglect of parents, especially mothers, is clearly reflected in the behaviours of the three main characters.
This story speaks of a married woman who fell in love with a man who was not her husband. She bore this man a child and realized that she could not live without him. In the event, she decides to leave her husband to be with the child’s father. However, there is only one problem and that is that she has two other children by her husband. She has a daughter who is 9 years old and is very mature for her age, and a darling son who is 5 years old. As she leaves to restart her life again with this other man, the 5 year old son is left behind to stay with his dad, and the little girl is tragically killed by a pack of wolves. The poem “Those Winter Sundays” displays a past relationship between a child and his father. Hayden makes use of past tense phrases such as “I’d wake and hear the cold splintering, breaking” (6) to show the readers that the child is remembering certain events that took place in the past. Although the child’s father did not openly express his love towards him when he was growing up, the child now feels a great amount of guilt for never thanking his father for all the things he actually did for him and his family. This poem proves that love can come in more than one form, and it is not always a completely obvious act.
The mother is a selfish and stubborn woman. Raised a certain way and never falters from it. She neglects help, oppresses education and persuades people to be what she wants or she will cut them out of her life completely. Her own morals out-weight every other family member’s wants and choices. Her influence and discipline brought every member of the family’s future to serious-danger to care to her wants. She is everything a good mother isn’t and is blind with her own morals. Her stubbornness towards change and education caused the families state of desperation. The realization shown through the story is the family would be better off without a mother to anchor them down.
The young, recently married farmers living in the Great Plains during the 1930s had a terrible life. First off, being married meant having multiple people to provide for. This is more responsibility, and leads to dividing up the food between family members. Then, the country was also in an economic downturn, so the price of food and crops were low. Farmers already had debt because of new machines and land that was purchased during World War I to keep up with the demand during the war. Then the depression caused banks to fail, so farmers lost all their money that was in the bank. Everyday life was treacherous, and there were few amenities in the home, with no plumbing or electricity. Life was awful for a farmer during the Great Depression.
Suffering from the death of a close friend, the boy tries to ignore his feelings and jokes on his sister. His friend was a mental patient who threw himself off a building. Being really young and unable to cope with this tragedy, the boy jokes to his sister about the bridge collapsing. "The mention of the suicide and of the bridge collapsing set a depressing tone for the rest of the story" (Baker 170). Arguments about Raisinettes force the father to settle it by saying, "you will both spoil your lunch." As their day continues, their arguments become more serious and present concern for the father who is trying to understand his children better. In complete agreement with Justin Oeltzes’ paper, "A Sad Story," I also feel that this dark foreshadowing of time to come is an indication of the author’s direct intention to write a sad story.
Cather regards a sensitive, caring family which can bring positive influences in communities as a success. Rosicky is sensitive enough to know that Polly, a city girl, does not get used to life in a country, and is caring enough to offer the Rudolphs the car but washes dishes himself. Washing dishes does not fit in the expected role of men in families, but Rosicky does it because he cares about his families’ feelings and wants to help Polly get over a hard time. His sincerity is also why he can look into Polly’s face “with his peculiar, knowing, indulgent smile without a shadow of reproach in it” (Cather, 689). Furthermore, the Rosickys show kindness to the community. When Doctor Ed went to the Rosickys’ house for breakfast, Mary “threw back her head and spoke out as if she were announcing him to the whole prairie,” (Cather, 681) and claimed that she would never let a doctor go without serving him breakfast. As Doctor Ed reflected, “people as generous and warm-hearted and affectionate as the Rosickys never got ahead much” (Cather, 682). Moreover, Cather illustrates that the occupation of lands helps shape the Rosickys’ attitude toward life. Rosicky thinks land can support people, and his kids do not “have to do with dishonest and cruel people” (Cather, 695) in cities, so that the Rosickys pay more attention to building a friendly community and standing on their
“Let It Snow” by David Sedaris is a short story that magnifies the extent in which children might go in order to grab the attention of their parents. It is simply short and it is full imagination that would help the reader what it feels to be a child. Sedaris first gives the reader a sense of imagery when he describes the snow storm that cancels school for him and his sisters. After the reader begins to reread he/she might think that the story will be about a snow day but it takes a sharp turn. The story focuses on the hurt and neglect in which the Sedaris and his siblings went through with their drunken mother with the absence of their father. The theme of abandonment can also be seen in the other texts as Heathcliff abandons his child for 13 years, news of the “master’s return” is revealed in the form of “A letter”, this highlights the distance between Linton and his family. Abandonment is also seen in Much Ado about Nothing because Leonato disowns Hero when it is claimed that she is unchaste, “-Do not live, Hero, do not ope thine eyes:” this imperative statement sounds very commanding and shows he really does mean what his saying.
