After reading Mike Adams article The Dead Grandmother/Exam Syndrome I was very amused by Adams sense of sarcasm while making the article perfectly humorous. The thesis of Adams article is “A student’s grandmother is far more likely to die suddenly just before the student takes an exam, than at any other time of year.” (Adams 3). Adams supports the thesis through charts that represent how students with lower grades and more important test are more likely to have a death in the family. Also, Adams suggest that the correlation between high divorce rates in the United States is directly attributed to high number of college students; due to that divorce and remarriage creates an increased pool of grandmothers. Ralindu grew up in Nigeria. Ralindu’s father works in America and three years after his residency was approved Ralindu came to America, and she is now getting used to American style. This situation has cause problems with her mom who came to America with her. Her mother still sticks to their Nigerian traditions like foods and their mannerisms and she wants her daughter, Ralindu, to act like her. Ralindu wants to act as a typical American teenager and that induces the disconnection with Nigerian culture which causes misunderstandings and arguments in the relationship with her mother.

Chapter 10 of Laurie Kaye Abraham’s Mama Might Be Better Off Dead mainly discusses the spread of preventable illnesses and the possible reasons poor areas have low immunization rates. Child immunization clinics fail to reach poor children because they are overburdened with patients, leading to long wait times. These clinics often require doctors to give a complete physical before giving shots and do not track children’s immunization records. Little effort goes into case management, which could assist in ensuring that vulnerable populations come in for preventative care. The author condemns Medicaid as a culprit for these other factors since states curtail expenses by creating barriers for poor families that would benefit from its programs. The argument about the majority of Medicaid spending going to nursing-home care versus to care for poor children and women is compelling and upsetting. How could a program designed primarily for the protection of poor children and mothers neglect to provide families with preventative care?
Marriage is a commitment that couples vow to love each other, and committed during their toughest times. Chris Offutt, the author of the short story called "Aunt Granny Lith" explains the trials and choices in a marriage between the couple Beth and Casey. Three parts in marriage are vital: communication, trust in one another, and unconditional love. All three elements will lead to a successful marriage. Marriage is what you put into your relationship not what you can get out of it. It is a team effort. Couples shouldn 't give 50/50 they should give 100/100 effort into marriage. Offutt describes these three parts throughout the story.

While many people around the world look to America and see a better life waiting for them and the American Dream waiting to be lived, often times this dream never comes to fruition, even if they do reach America. Such is the case in the short story Grandma’s Tales, by Andrew Lam in which a recently deceased Vietnamese grandmother becomes reborn as a much younger and improved version of herself ready to live life to the fullest. This rebirth symbolizes the life that she wishes she lived, however due to constant conflict and famine in Vietnam, and her deteriorating health in America, was never able to do so. It can be obviously seen that the stress has occurred since they are children. For instance, in Thailand, students generally want to go to famous school so that they take advantage to go to well-known universities. Studying in celebrated universities mostly causes having a good opportunity to find a job or earn a lot of money. This circumstance not only happens in Thailand, but also occurs in many countries. Some people are laid off from their companies; consequently the stress occurs in their family, which leads to divorce. Some families can earn money, but inadequate for covering their expenses, therefore it is easy to think about divorce. Nevertheless, the rates of unemployment trend to continually increase as a result the divorce rates can also rise.
Something that I really struggled with was the passing of my Grandmother. She was a strong woman and an inspiration to everybody in my family. I think that I struggled with it because she was a great human being, I kind of looked up to her a bit, and of course she was part of my family. I think that along with her passing, I struggled with the fact that she died when I thought that she did nothing wrong in her entire life and did not deserve to die. Mainly the fact that she was a really good person and she just died like that.
