The Darkest Day

Everyone freaks out about that one day. That day that comes with Zombies, mass murders, with dead people everywhere, and the world possibly ending. Doomsday. I actually might have experience with this. Today is the day that scientists predict that the world will end. Of course no one believes them because after the Mayan calendar ran out, we were still alive and well. I wasn’t alive then, but my ancestors were.
My day begins like all others. I wake up to the sound of a car crash. Typical New Yorkers not doing anything they’re supposed too. As I peer out my window I see that a car has run into a no parking sign. The driver is yelling and kicking the sign. I can’t help but giggle. He’s probably cursing at the sign, but the sign belongs there. He does not. I’m laughing so loudly now that I don’t even notice that my mom enters.
“Morning Sophie! Are you excited for school?” she chirps. Thats weird. My mom never chirps. She’s always either too rushed or too busy to be happy. But she like everyone else might be waiting for the world to end.
“Hi mom.” I say brushing her brown hair out of her face. I jerk my hand away and squeal. “Mom, what happened?” I ask.
“What? You don’t like my makeup?”
“Umm, well it just kind of, well surprised me. But that’s only because you never wear makeup.” My mom is a lawyer for celebrities across New York. She looks good naturally so if she puts on makeup it’s a little creepy. ”Is dad still at work?” I continue.
“Yes, he had to work all night for a project at the lab.” my mom responds glancing out the window. My dad is a world renowned scientist. He studies many secret things just outside of New York City. He probably spends more time at his lab than at our home. I am 14 so I can stay home by myself,...

...e that one day it will. Paulina also expects this. She and I are best friends and that’s our secret thing. Magic-lovers forever we would say.
I hear a knock on the front door. It’s most likely Paulina I run to the door. She barely has time to say hi to anyone in my family before I rush her into my bedroom and safely close the door.
“So have you figured anything out?” she asks trying to catch her breath.
“Well nothing besides the fact that you and I are immune to the Zombie Rain.”
“So what we are calling this crystal that brings storms is Zombie Rain. Clever title.” She says, of course being sarcastic.
“Well it turns people into Zombies!” I say as I throw my hands in the air.
Paulina laughs, “Calm down girl! I’m totally agreeing with you. This whole thing is messed up. How do we know that this “Zombie Rain” will actually come? How do we know if this is true?”
