Excessive self-pride, otherwise known as hubris is expertly demonstrated in Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible. Through the thematic use of reputation, Arthur Miller illuminates how John Proctor and Reverend Parris are driven by their own selfishness and hubris.
John Proctor is typically an honest man and along with Rebecca Nurse tries to be the voice of reason deeming the concept of witchcraft ridiculous. Proctor has an extremely toxic, and particularly one-sided relationship with Abigail Williams the origin of the tumult that becomes the Salem Witch Trials.
