While reading The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, it had presented itself was many possible themes, but the theme that best fits was reputation. In salem one’s reputation is incredibly important, it is how they are presented to the world. John Proctor, Reverend Hale and Reverend Parris where the ones that that were most concerned with their reputation in Salem.
John Proctor had an affair with Abigail Williams and did everything he could possibly do to keep it a secret, which left an impact on his relationship with his wife. Proctor was so fixated on keeping is status in the society, that he stayed silent while Abigail made accusations on who is a witch. He had many opportunities to confess that Abigail was lying, but he did not because they would ask him how he knew. He did not want to ruin “his good name”. For instance, proctor had said, “Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul leave me my name!” (Miller 211). Also that Reverend Parris’s daughter had been impacted by witches, that put her in a coma, he knew that she was apart of disruption of Salem. He feared because of his family’s involvement in the witchcraft, his reputation as a minister of the church was questionable. He was embarrassed of his family, because a minister of the church, a person that has looked highly to and was considered the closest things to God, was somehow involved with “evil”. “And what shall I say to them? That my daughter and my niece I discovered dancing like heathen in the forest?” (Miller 142), said Reverend Parris.
