Recommended: Controversies on the Salem witch trials

It is August 19, 1692, the sun is out and the air is warm. I am bustling about the house, making sure all of the preparations are in order so I will be able to attend the witch hangings tonight in Salem. I am excited to see the witches face to face, but I am also nervous. I do not want the witches to harm me. The hangings are supposed to start in a couple of hours, and I want to arrive early to make sure that I do not miss anything important. So, I gather my things and begin my journey to Salem. I arrive at the site for the hangings in just under three hours. Many families have already arrived and are standing around just hanging on to every second and waiting for the convicted witches to arrive. "Ow! Something just stabbed my foot!" a younger man screamed. The man turned directly to the only person next to him: Rebecca. "What did you do to me?" he screamed. Rebecca gave no response. "Answer me woman!" he shouted. The crowd immediately goes silent to listen in on the argument. "I've done nothing to you" Rebecca said calmly. "This woman is a witch!" he roared. She stabbed me in the foot with her "magic!" Arrest her!" Several guards appeared practically out of thin air, and they dragged her over to the old, wooden cart to be taken to prison to await trial in the morning. The next morning, at exactly 8:00, two guards came to Rebecca to take her to her trial. They pulled Rebecca from the floor and they lugged her behind them like a big bag of dirty clothes. Rebecca stood outside of the court room for the current trial to end. She knew that the court room was filled with people by just hearing the screams and shouts of the adults after hearing the sentencing. After reading Roach’s book, I’ve found out that this thought alone was false because none of the accused were meant to be burned at all but instead the whole town was called out to watch these women being hung. It created an example for the town and explained to them the consequences of being convicted of witchcraft. What I’m now recognizing is what I did ignore: how it came to be and how it all ended, who was accused, and was giving these accusations out.

    When one evokes The Salem Witch Trials of 1692, the image that comes to most peoples minds are that of witches with pointed hats riding broomsticks. This is not helped by the current town of Salem, Massachusetts, which profits from the hundreds of thousands of tourists a year by mythologizing the trials and those who were participants. While there have been countless books, papers, essays, and dissertations done on this subject, there never seems to be a shortage in curiosity from historians on these events. Thus, we have Bernard Rosenthal's book, Salem Story: Reading the Witch Trials of 1692, another entry in the historiographical landscape of the Salem Witch Trials. This book, however, is different from most that precede it in that it does not focus on one single aspect, character, or event; rather Rosenthal tells the story of Salem in 1692 as a narrative, piecing together information principally from primary documents, while commenting on others ideas and assessments. By doing so, the audience sees that there is much more to the individual stories within the trials, and chips away at the mythology that has pervaded the subject since its happening. Instead of a typical thesis, Rosenthal writes the book as he sees the events fold out through the primary documents, so the book becomes more of an account of what happened according to primary sources in 1692 rather than a retelling under a new light.
