As a senior, the concept of attending college constantly remains on the forefront of my focus. Between keeping up with schoolwork, participating in an abundance of activities, and applying for countless scholarships, senior year has been physically and mentally challenging; however, I believe that the time I have put in will yield positive results. I hope to earn the Cox Scholarship based on my academic achievement and tremendous work ethic. As with many students, the most important components of my college career will consist of studying and attending classes to maintain the best grades possible. This is a philosophy that I have lived by since the earliest stages of my education, and it has positively affected all aspects of my schooling.
As Zig Ziglar once said, "If you are not willing to learn, no one can help you. If you are determined to learn, no one can stop you." Basically, Ziglar is emphasizing how learning can be accomplished, only if you put your mind to it. In “Learning (Your First Job),” Dr. Robert Leamnson shares his strong belief of beginning students entering the post-secondary education. Leamnnson discusses the many ways of learning that can be used in college, such as studying, notes, assignments, and exams. Leamnson continuously discusses how no one will learn unless they want to. Learning is a biological process that relies on the brain. Just like how our bodies need maintenance, the brain does too. College is a place where you learn things that help you later. Leamnson mentions how students are responsible for succeeding in college not by just showing up, but by putting in effort towards the classes they are taking. In order to succeed in the learning of the post-secondary education process, students should be aware of how to make notes, understand what they are studying, and take assignments seriously.

They mentioned that students need to study but also take a break and be ready to learn and pay attention (Dopp, Austin, Parish). Powers and Swick mention in tip seven, celebrate small accomplishments along the way, is that you should celebrate your small accomplish like tests, quiz, and finishing you semester.
Being raised in a Christian household allowed me to appreciate the value of helping others in need, and I am honored to be selected to apply for this scholarship for my dedication in my studies. The LCC Academic Achievement Scholarship will help me achieve my goal of helping others as a Registered Nurse. Laredo as my hometown, I have seen a health need in the community, which is why I plan to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree at TAMIU and work at the local hospital. As I devote time and effort towards my education, I have gladly been able to maintain my 4.0 GPA and be admitted onto the LCC Dean’s List three times.
I have often wondered what it would be like to experience the freedom of choosing my own class schedule. This has to be infinitely more stimulating and enjoyable. I am also aware that college will be significantly more challenging, but I have always found it easier to study for a class that interests me. I am willing to accept the fact that as long as I am in school, there will be required courses which may not engender excitement or enthusiasm; however, success should not be as difficult to achieve due to the maturity that is developing during this last year of high school. In addition, I have gained an understanding of the benefit of being well rounded. There is value in all classes taken. It helps to know that even my least favorite subject will contribute to the ultimate goal of personal and career development.
As students in college classrooms sit and listen to their teacher’s requirements and lectures, students often asked themselves why am I here? Why am I taking this class? Is it relevant to my major, my life or career choice? College-level institutions of learning have a hard time figuring out what is the best way to teach students and what works for the student’s best. According to John Dewey “how students are taught is as important as what they are taught” (415). College level students should be taught the skills and abilities that are needed to survive in the work force as well as in society as a whole. College success has become a most desirable goal. However, many students struggle through college. In fact, according to the Website Ask.com, approximately 15 percent of college students receive a degree. Because I’m willing to earn a degree like many other successful students, I find that college is the stepping stone to my dream goals. I know that college is difficult, but I realize that attaining my dream of a college education will require me to understand the benefits of what I’m learning, to prepare for obstacles, to seek advice, and to create effective and reasonable strategies will help me achieve my goals.
Grades are one of the most important factors of my high school career. My grade point average and my SAT's determine what college I go to. They determine my effort at high school. I must do whatever possible to keep my grade point average above 3.0. My GPA currently is ok, but if I could increase it by just .2 I would be much better off. Grades are very crucial for getting acceptance to college. They are one of the major things that colleges look at to accept you (or so I have been told). So I will keep pushing myself so that my grades will increase this year, making it possible for me to hopefully enter a better school then I can right now.
Receiving my first collegiate scholarship was a very important point in my life. This is a wonderful experience that I would like to thank you for personally. I concluded my second year with all A’s and a cumulative 3.87 GPA. This summer I worked on a research project within the communication college at Ohio State, and in the fall I will begin my third year of college as a strategic communication major. I also hold multiple part time jobs, one of which being an audio visual technician in the Ohio Union. This scholarship will greatly alleviate some financial stress my parents and I have met during my time as a student.
My primary objective is to be able to take care of my loved ones. However to attain that goal, I must complete my secondary objective which would be to become an accountant. A course that I have taken in high school to help prepare myself for this career is Business and Information Management 1. This class has taught me the basics to all of the Microsoft Office programs, as well as basic business skills and etiquette. I am also taking a college level economics course, which to me is one of the most interesting and useful classes that I have taken as it is all about the choices that people make. However, these courses alone are not enough for me to attain my goals in life. I want to attend college and gain new insight on how to enter into the profession of my choice. I realize that maintaining a decent grade point average in college is no easy task, however I feel that I am quite prepared for the challenge. This confidence stems from the courses that I have taken while in high school, as the vast majority of them were Pre-AP, AP, and dual credit classes. These courses have given me experience with college assignments along with the classroom atmosphere of an institution of higher education. College is not the end of the journey. Students need to be reminded constantly that their learning will continue on into their careers and life. All the learning activities and assignments are simply a foundation for the skill of the lifelong learner. The instructor simply points them out and directs the student.
Junior year I lightened up my schedule for the second semester and enrolled in an ACT prep class. I bought three different ACT prep books and filled every page with pen and highlighter. After February 7th of my junior year, I was an average student with a 34 ACT. I knew that from then on a scholarship was a dream in reach. When I read a letter from the University of Alabama at Birmingham at the start of senior year, a weight was lifted from my shoulders. My ACT combined with my master status as a student had helped me achieve the status I had always sought for: a scholarship recipient.
Success in college begins during high school. It’s the unfortunate truth, but to handle the rigor of college, it’s vital to avoid the highly communicable disease of ‘Senioritis’ and instead, implement productive study habits. It may seem trivial when high school is relatively easy and college acceptance letters have already arrived, but developing discipline in a low risk situation tremendously reduces the struggle that eventually shocks the unprepared.
During the first few days of my first semester of college, I felt overwhelmed to the point where I kept asking myself, “What am I still doing here?” However, my views on my journey in college have developed positively. Being a successful student and achieving continued academic success is fundamental in order to complete an associate degree and become a successful professional. College is challenging, but it can be a rewarding growth experience and easier when setting up goals. Having educational and career goals helps students keep the focus and motivation. Besides, having knowledge of different learning styles can help students learn about themselves and increase efficiency while studying. Writing skills learned in college are also a powerful tool for both academic and career success. The campus is a great place to find tools to succeed and achieve continued academic success. It is also important to keep academic honesty as a good habit and as a value of integrity throughout college and later on in the professional environment.
Seeing the finish line on the horizon has motivated me to pass this course and graduate from Austin Community College. To get to this point I was willing to sacrifice my financial stability in order to earn high grades and complete an associate program. In addition to this I’m now willing to also change my studying habits and how I spend my time. Although I’ve learned a fair amount of strategies to being successful in college there is still much more that I have to learn. Writing this paper has given me the opportunity to view my purpose as a student differently. I have realized that attending college has much more to give than financial stability.
