Rape is defined “the carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and against her will.”(Siegel,352) . Rape is seen all throughout history and it is still happening today. It is believed that about 15 - 38 percent of rape are reported to officials, meaning about 85-62 percent of rapes go unreported. Most rape cases go unreported due to fear, guilt, and shame. About only 9 percent of rapes get prosecuted and only five percent of those lead to felony conviction; Only six percent of rapist will get a conviction( “Reporting Sexual..”).
Researching the topic of rape I could not find anything about how far back rape originated from what I have researched it seems like rape has always been around. Rape is mentioned in the bible which means rape has been …show more content…

Whenever girls go out they are constantly on guard of someone slipping drugs into their drinks; I know from experience my female friends will drink beforehand so they do not drink at parties because of the chance of rape. Often I carry pepper spray when walking at night and letting someone know where I am at at the moment and where I am headed too. I share my location constantly via find my friends on IOS with my mom and close friend so that they are somewhat always aware of where I am. Growing up my parents were extra cautious and I was not able to sleepover at friends houses because of the possibility of something bad happening to me because they are not family and do not trust other households. Rape has affected the way I live and the way I see people. I am not the only one affected by this in day to day life, an article written in the huffington post written by a man explains what he does every day due to rapes impact on society. Zaron ( the author) talks about he make women aware in a friendly manner that he is near them to not startle them and make them think he is a threat. Falling under the definition of sexual assault are sexual activities as forced sexual intercourse, forcible sodomy, child molestation, incest, fondling, and In the United States 80% of sexual assault victims are under the age of 30. Of that 80%, 44% are under the age of 18 (RAINN, 2016). That leaves 36% of victims between the ages of 18 and 30. These percentages become even more alarming when that 80% is of about 293,000 victims of secual assualt each year (RAINN, 2016). It is estimated that 1 in every 6 women in the US has been or will be victims of sexual assault in their lifetime. The risks of sexual assault increase on college campuses. Women ages 18-24 who are enrolled in college are 3 times more likely than women in general to suffer from sexual violence (RAINN, 2016). One would think that with all these women being sexually assaulted, one would hear more about it, or perhaps the police stations would constantly be busy. This is not the case. Sexual assault is one of the most unreported crimes, with 68% still being left unreported (RAINN, 2016). This could be because of every 100 rapists, only 2 will spend a day in jail. Of the 32 out of 100 that would be reported, only 7 are referred to an arrest (RAINN, 2016). Why would men or women want to report sexual assault when the system that is supposed to protect them fails so often, and why does this system continue to fail?
