Child marriage is a human rights violation. Despite laws against it, the practice remains widespread, in part because of persistent poverty and gender inequality. Marriage throughout the world is considered to be a happy moment in everyone’s life and is also a moment of celebration but sadly the practice of child marriage has become a regular practice. In the past two decades Trinidad and Tobago experienced over 3000 child marriages with brides as low as twelve years old. These child marriages were mostly practiced by persons of the Muslim and Hindu religion as a form of their Religious culture and tradition. It denies the youth an opportunity to grow and empower themselves. It hampers their education as they are too young to balance both their marriage lives and education. The girls are pressured a lot more in comparison to the male counterparts and impact girls with more intensity. Most of the girls who are married at a young age often marry males of an older age sometimes by their parents. These young girls are kept back from school where they can enjoy being a child and doing what a child does best, instead they are forced to be an adult in the company of their husbands. This can be stressful for these young girls as they are forced into many responsibilities without obtaining any proper education. Child marriage is a human rights violation that prevents girls from obtaining an education, enjoying optimal health, bonding with others their own age, maturing, and ultimately choosing their own life partners. Child marriage is driven by poverty and has many effects on girls' health. It shows that young girls are the ones that suffer from child marriage and based on statistics girls under the age of eighteen are married to men ten times older than their age.
