The Company of Wolves The Company of Wolves was written by Angela Carter, a legendary English fiction writer. Before Angela could become this greatly renowned Novelist, she had to of had a start in life. She was born in Eastbourne, England on May 7, 1940. Her father was a journalist, and one of her greatest influences into the world of writing. When World War II was at its first break, she was evacuated and sent to live with her maternal grandmother in Yorkshire. During Teenage years, Carter attended Streatham and Clapham High School, where she was ridiculed for her eating disorder, Anorexia Nervosa. After graduating, she attended the University of Bristol where she majored in English literature. On all of her travels and expeditions, she also It talks about how much more ruthless they are in the winter when there is scarce food. The story describes how there was once a witch that turned an entire wedding party into wolves. Now there are wolves that are more than they seem, and have found ways into people’s homes. So this “Little Red Riding Hood” girl goes out to her grandmother’s house, and takes a knife. She runs into this handsome man in the woods that bets he can reach her grandmother’s house before her and bets on a kiss from the girl. So now the girls dawdles on purpose, because she secretly wants him to win, yet the man is a Wolf and eats her grandmother when he arrives at the cottage first. Only when the girl finds the wolf, does the storyline change. She isn’t afraid, not the way she should be. And she strips naked, and strips the man naked, and they complete a wolf-like wedding ceremony. And she sleeps in her dead grandmother’s bed between the paws of a tender Her mother cannot deny her but if her father were to, she would not be able to leave. It shows a strong sense of dominance in men. Another way to highlight the patriarchal views of the time is the quote “when he ran away from his marriage bed, so that she wept and her second husband beat her.” This quote could be seen as trying to portray women as weak. But probably the largest controversy is the objectification of women and that may be demonstrated with the quote “as she freely gave the kiss she owed him.” This particular quote not only seems to destroy the image of the strong heroine, but makes it seem as if she owed him something. This particular quote can be written of as nothing, due to the previous bet in the story and she did lose. But by some it can be seen as objectification. Throughout all the controversy, there is one side of the story that may perhaps be the most important, Carter’s side. She specifically writes the story off track to show sexual freedom of the young girl, she is not trying to hide little girls or warn them from sex, but trying to empower them to make their own decisions. She is portraying a feminist protagonist
