The Characteristics Of The Ancient Egyptian Pyramids

The Egyptian pyramids are ancient masonry structures with a square

base and four sloping triangular faces located in Egypt [1]

were built as tombs for the country's Pharaohs and their consorts during

the Old and Middle Kingdom periods. As of 2008, 138 pyramids have been

discovered in Egypt. [2] The most famous are the three great pyramid tombs at

Giza, which were built by three successive Fouth-Dynasty kings. I believe that

they are the best representatives of ancient Egyptian art, not only because

they are architectural marvels, but also the because of their portrayal of

wisdom and the culture of ancient Egypt.

1. Architectural beauty

The Giza Pyramids embody great beauty with unique elements not

seen in modern architecture. Together with the surroundings, such as the

small pyramids and the temples, they form a complex and symmetric layout.

Their location was also chosen with special consideration to capitalize on the

building techniques of the time period. All these considerations have made

them great wonders of the world. With the Nile River flowing beside them,

water, sand, wind and the pyramid tombs altogether present a magnificent

picture.

2. Wisdom of Ancient Egyptian People

It is not difficult to imagine how many problems occurred during the

construction of these pyramids. As each one consists of millions of huge

stones (ranging from 2000 kg to 100 tons for each stone), it called for a great

quantity of workers to carry these stones to the construction site. Without

trucks or cranes, how did they achieve that? And, without explosives in that

period of time, how did the people get enough stones or rock? Some people

bodies. As the Egyptian people believe in eternity, they had to come up with

the methods to keep the deceased’s physical bodies eternally existing. As

a result, dealing with mummies became an important subject at that time,

and Egyptians studied anatomy to develop a better understanding of the

human body. In this way, medical science developed quickly. The connection

between architecture and medicine is an example of how art integrated with

science.

Therefore, I believe that pyramids are one of the most import pieces of

art in Egypt and are representative of the period in which they were built.

The values of art and science combined to produce spectacular results that

are still seen today. For ancient Egyptians, it is the connection of soul and

physical body, while for modern people it presents the beauty of mystery,

elegance and authority.
