One specific challenge I have overcome in my life is my weight. Like many others in America I found myself obese and unhealthy, but unlike many people, I decided to take control of my weight and lose 120 pounds. Coming from a family that is severely obese, I was sure my genetics were going to keep me overweight my whole life, but I chose to change that mindset my junior year of high school. My summer was very different than my classmates, but I had a goal I wanted to achieve and I had no problem devoting my summertime to it. After I had lost my first 50 pounds from running on my town streets after dark and my living room workouts in the morning, I decided to start lifting weights. From lifting weights and continually eating healthy, I am at my weight today of 120 pounds less than I was 3 years ago. Losing weight has not just been about being thin for me, it has been about breaking boundaries and not letting my genetics determine my future for myself. Being able to completely change my life has instilled in me the determination that anything I dream of is possible if I work hard enough. I had always cared about my education throughout my life, but I feel as though the dedication I learned from my weight loss has contributed to my success in college. to get my workout in before I head to my classes for the day, eat as healthy as I can, and have a never ending amount of perseverance. Living healthy and working to make myself a better person physically and mentally is very important to me and I feel like that is why I am equipped for an intense nursing program. Nurses should be role models of health to their patients and community, being healthy and physically fit can only improve my care I can provide to others. Losing weight has shown me to give one hundred percent in everything I do and that is why my grades are above average, because I treat all assignments and tests with the same mindset of shooting for perfection. Overcoming my weight has allowed me to gain a new found confidence in myself and see myself as a someone who can achieve anything I set my mind to, and that is why I want to be a nurse, because I feel like I can handle anything the job may involve.
