The Causes of World War One (1)
If you were to look back at WWI, you would see that there were direct and indirect causes to the war. The assassination of Archduke Ferdinand was an immediate cause. Gavrilo Princip, working with a Serbian anti-Austrian secret society called “The Black Hand” shot Archduke Ferdinand on June 28, 1914 in order to make way for a Slavic revolution. The assassination didn’t do as Princip hoped, and it was used as an excuse for Austria to take hostile action against Serbia. That was not the only cause of the war.
The Alliance System was one of the festering causes of the war. After Germany took Alsace-Lorraine, Bismarck wanted to make sure that France didn’t make enough allies to take back the territory in a war. So he started to form an alliance with Austria-Hungry and Italy. France saw this as a threat, so it started making alliances of its own. France first turned to Russia then to Britain creating the Triple Entente. Now with forces in place on either side, nerves were frayed. What better question to ask next than why. Why were nerves frayed? The nations involved had large militaries.
These nations were building large armies and enhancing the glories of war. After rationalizing a huge arms race, people were eager to put up large amounts of money to support their government’s vast military. Great Britain has always had a large navy. Germany decided it wanted a navy to rival Britain’s. When the people of Britain saw the buildup of Germany’s navy, they got scared and started producing more and bigger ships for it’s own navy. Every time Britain got a “leg up” on Germany, Germany struggled to outdo Britain, and vice-versa. Soon, the public was clamoring for war. Militarism is based on imperialism and the fear that another nation is getting ahead imperially.
Imperialism is extending control of a nation over foreign lands. Countries expanded in the 1600’s to help their economies. They did this mostly through mercantilism. After industrialization in the 1800’s, imperialism changed. Two new and eager powers were on the scene. Italy and Germany were new nations and ready to catch up to Britain and others in the colony race. Imperialism could be related to nationalism.
There are two kinds of nationalism. There were the early forms of nationalism, where people of a similar race and nationality wanted a nation to themselves.
The assassination of Franz Ferdinand, Austrian Archduke, is often cited as the direct cause of WWI. While it was a significant catalyst to the war, the circumstances surrounding WWI were actually more complicated. The first great world war was caused by a variety of factors including: tensions between countries due to a threatening system of alliances, stockpiling of weaponry, and nationalism.
One of the causes of World War One was the Alliances. These were settlements or oaths to defend and help other countries. It was a thought that alliances would calm things down and make peace, and in case of war others would protect each other, so it would be harder to fight with that country. In 1914 the most powerful countries in Europe were divided into opposite Alliances, The Triple Alliance and the Central Powers or the Triple Entente. The Triple Alliance was made up of Germany, Italy and Austria-Hungary. The Triple Entente was made up of Britain, France and Russia. European Alliances had a major part of being in the war. These two powers were very worried about being attacked after all of the tension from Nationalism, Imperialism and Militarism. To make sure these countries weren’t attacked and defeated these alliances were formed. Germany and Austria-Hungary made an alliance but they made it secretly in 1879, after this happened Italy joined this Dual Alliance to form the Triple Alliance because it was annoyed with France for stopping its plans to col...
During the period of July 1914 to November 1918 was when the world took a turn of events, and had an everlasting effect on the world including the people in it. Yet, the main focus was Europe and the United States. The causes of World War 1 also known as the Great War included both short, and long term occurrences. Some of the reasons for these occurrences included a multipolar power in Europe, Imperialism, the alliance system, nationalism, imperial rivalries in Africa / Asia, and a sudden assassination. However, this was based on what the public thought, and was some of the reoccurring things the public seen as the main reasons. In my opinion, I feel the main causes for the Great War starting off was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand which led up to nationalism, imperialism, militarism, and alliances. I say this because I seen all these as a cause and effect thing, opposed from everyone
War is what keeps a nation from dying, it is the backbone of a country. This is the shown throughout the course of World War I, also known as “the war to end all wars.” World War I started in the summer of 1914. Archduke Francis Ferdinand, from the Austro – Hungarian Empire was visiting Bosnia. He was shot, along with his wife, Sofia, by a young man from the Black Hand, Gavrillo Princip. What were the three main factors that started World War I? There were three main underlying causes that started World War I: greed, nationalism, and militarism.
Imperialism summarizes a powerful country’s attempt to extend its power and culture over weaker countries, through negotiation or military force. The tension all started when there was competition to build a colonial empire among european countries over foreign territories, to strengthen the european industrials. These colonies that were once territories, got invaded by european countries through strong military forces, and political pressure, provided them
Alliances between European nations can also be considered an underlying cause of World War I. As a result of the Triple Alliance consisting of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy, the Triple Entente (understanding) was formed between France, Britain, and Russia. Although France and Britain were natural enemies, their fear of Germany united them together with Russia. These alliances set the final stage for the beginning of World War I. Each country in each alliance would help each other during warfare. For example, if Germany attacked France, Britain and Russia would help France, and Italy and Austria would help Germany, dragging Europe into a state of chaos and violence.
Imperialism is the extension of a nation's power over another land. There was a time period where it focused on imperialism. The period of this time was 1800 through 1914. Also, some regions of the world were involved during this time. Japan and Africa were even involved during this time.
To begin, the system of alliances made throughout Europe was a major cause that started World War 1. Before the start of World War 1, a Serbian terrorist group had murdered the Prince and Princess of Austria. The Austrian government believed that the Serbian government played a role in aiding the assassins in the murder of the Prince and Princess. Not too long after, Austria had declared war on Serbia for this act. Austria was showing a
Besides the assassination of the archduke there were four other reasons for the start of WW1. 1. Militarism- the building of large armies. All the nations in Europe at that time were engaged in what today could only be called an arms race. As soon as one nation built a new weapon, all the others followed suit. 2. Alliance System- The building of alliances to strengthen the borders of a country. In theses alliances if one country went to war all the other countries in the alliance were forced to go to war also. 3. Imperialism- The practice of colonizing other lands by large European nations. 4.Nationalism- The feeling of Patriotism in a country that makes it compete with all other counties in the area in all areas.
In attempts of peace and unification, Otto von Bismarck tried to isolate France through alliances with Germany, Austria-Hungary, and eventually Italy, forming the Triple Alliance. Again taking another ally away from France, Bismarck signed a treaty with Russia. Later, Bismarck was forced to step down and Kaiser Wilhelm II became the ruler of Germany. As a stubborn and prideful man, he declared that he would “show the world just how mighty Germany had become” (World History Textbook, page 408). He annihilated the treaty with Russia, in which Russia responded with an alliance with France. Wilhelm’s actions as ruler of Germany also lead to Great Britain forming the Triple Entente with France and Russia. As shown, Germany’s actions lead to a domino effect of several alliances in Europe, tying the nations up into a net of war. All of these alliances will be what leads to the ferocity of this particular
- France's alliance with Russia brought it into the war. Germany's war plan (the flawed "Schlieffen Plan", designed in the 19th century) was constructed around the knowledge that a war with France would mean a war with Russia, and vice versa.
In the time leading up to World War I, there were two main alliances which included the Triple alliance and the Triple Entente. The Triple Alliance included Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. It’s opposition the triple Entente, includes France, United Kingdom, and Russia. Germany was worried, if they did go to war, they would have to fight two fronts. In addition to this, in 1915, Italy left the Triple Alliance scarring Germany, and Austria-Hungary. This left the two countries vulnerable, in that it meant they were out-numbered three to two.
World War I was one of the first biggest war of the 20th century. The argument of who started World War I has been discussed and blamed ever since the war started. There are those who believed that the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the cause of World War I, but the assassination was not the only reason that causes World War I. After the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Because Russia has a special ethnic tie with Serbia, Russia declares war on Austria-Hungary. Later, countries from The Triple Alliance and The Triple Entente got involved. What is the M.A.I.N reason that cause World War I? There were at least three underlying causes of World War I; militarism, imperialism , and the most fundamental cause of all, alliances.
The assassination of Archduke Ferdinand was the main reason the war started. Austria-Hungary blamed the assassination on Serbia. This lead to Austria-Hungary invading Serbia. Serbia was an allie of Russia so this lead to the Russians declaring war on Austria-Hungary. Germany, who was an allie of Austria-Hungary, then declared war on both on Serbia and Russia. This triggered a chain of events that lead to Germany and its allies against Russia and its allies. Countries caught in the cross fire also joined in the war.
World War I was one of the bloodiest wars that the world has ever seen. The question remains today, what was the reason for World War I to occur? If you were to look back at World War I, you would see that there were direct and indirect causes to the war. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was a direct immediate cause. That was not the only cause of the war. Four underlying causes broke the general peace and balance of power in early 20th century Europe. World War I undeniably was caused by militaristic attitudes, entangled alliances, imperialistic movements and nationalistic behaviors.
