It seems that in today’s time, there are more people who cohabitate rather than marry. Some of the old timers call it “shacking up” and do not agree with the fact of two people living together without being married. Although some people like to point their fingers at one certain thing causing this trend, that is not the case. Not only from studying the topic, but also from personal experiences, I have found that some causes are that this generation is afraid of commitment and divorce, but they also see financial benefits within it.
Commitment issues seem to be a major cause of people choosing cohabitation over marriage, because they see it as an “escape hatch” of their relationship. We have all seen that this generation seems to live their …show more content…

After talking to an ERO/EA/RTRP, that owns her own tax company, I have learned that some people have even gotten in trouble for acting like they were divorced but actually still be together, just so that they could receive the tax benefits that come from it. They can each file their taxes separately and receive more money each year, rather than filing together. If they had children, the mother can claim them as dependents, and it would look as if she is a single mother, and get more money just for that. Children of “single parents” can receive free lunch, fee waivers, and several other things for school. There are plenty of “loop holes” that people can go through, to receive more money and aid from the government.
There are many contributing factors of cohabitation over marriage. Some are scared of the thought of being committed to one person for the rest of their life, and some do not want to end up in the situation of divorcing someone they love or losing all the things that they have worked hard for. Every factor is not negative; some do it for financial benefits that come from being just living together instead of married.
