Before watching this film I was very confused on what the Hero’s Journey would be as I thought it was only made for action movies even though I was very much wrong. Being that this film was an ensemble I did not know if it would be possible, but the journey did clearly take place with the father Richard Hoover. The inciting incident takes place when Olive gets the call telling her that she has qualified for the Little Miss Sunshine Pageant. The Call to Adventure is when they must get Olive to the event, and the refusal is when Richard says he cannot because of work however he must accept the call as they are unable to fly as a result of money being tight and Richard is sprung into coming with them as he is the only one able to drive the stick …show more content…

There are five key plot points throughout this film starting with the inciting incident of Olive learning that she has qualified for the pageant. The second plot point is when Richard asks his daughter if she believes she can win it and when she obliges saying yes, it is settled and the family is off. The midpoint of and third plot point is when Olive comes into her parents room stating “Grandpa won’t wake up,” inciting that in fact he has died. At the end of Act Two the fourth plot point transpires as they make it to the event five minutes late, convincing the sound guy who hates the pageants to get Olive registered into the show. Lastly, the last plot point near the end of the third act when Olive’s routine is a failure, but her whole family comes together to save her from embarrassment and this is the first time we see them work together as a …show more content…

He says “Fuck the Naval Academy. If I want to fly, I’ll find a way.” This speak volumes about Dwayne’s drive and ambition. Olive’s character arc is probably the only one who did not change as she maintained a positive vice throughout, truly being the “little miss sunshine” that the family needed. Sheryl finds a sense of empowerment, and does not dwell on past divorce or finances as she protects her daughters dreams not allowing her family to bring down Olive. Frank uses Proust citing him and saying to Dwayne “Anyway, he gets down to the end of his life, he looks back and he decides that all the years he suffered -- those were the best years of his life. Because they made him who he was. They forced him to think and grow, and to feel very deeply. And the years he was happy? Total waste. Didn 't learn anything.” (Pg. 87) It is evident that Frank realizes that suffering can be good as it forces people to discover themselves and to grow accordingly. Edwin’s arc turns into someone who wants the best for his family and for them to not make the mistakes in life that he had made growing up. Lastly, Richard’s arc is to accept and cope with failure and being labeled a “loser,” and understanding that in order to win in life you have to
