This book is titled “The Call of the Wild.” It was written by Jack London, and it’s an adventure genre. It is realistic fiction as well as an american classic. The theme of the book is about the struggle to survive in the wild. That can apply to us today when we go camping or out into the wild in general. The story mainly takes place during the Klondike gold rush in 1896; Klondike is a very frigid area with a lot of snow and ice. The very beginning of the story takes place “at a big house in the sun-kissed Santa Clara Valley.” The story is written in omniscient third person. Then Francois and Perrault buy Buck from the man, and they take him to Klondike to make him a sled dog, where Buck starts to become a fierce survivor of the wild. Once they fade out of Buck’s life, he and his team are adopted by a “scotch half breed” who delivered wood to people and overworked Buck and his sled team. After a while, the “scotch half breed” sells Buck and his team to a man named Charles, his wife Mercedes, and her brother Hal. They were not ready for the frigid weather and overworked the sled team even more, to the point of most of them dying. Once Buck is too tired to even stand, Hal abuses him with a club to get him up. Then John Thornton stands up to Hal and takes Buck to care for him and help him heal. With John as his new master, Buck finally starts to feel genuine love for a human again. A few months later, Buck starts to feel a strange call attracting him into the forest. When he answers the call and travels into the forest at night, he finds and befriends a wolf. Later he feels another call into the forest, and he goes into the forest and stays there for a few days. When Buck comes back to John’s camp, he realizes that John and his partners have been murdered by the Yeehats.
