In Titus Livius’, The Early History of Rome, Livy takes on the task of documenting Rome’s early history and some of the famous individuals who help contribute to the ‘greatness’ of Rome. Livy dedicates an entire portion of his writing to describe the reigns of the first seven kings of Rome; all who influence the formation and governance of Rome in some way. However, of the seven kings in early Roman history, King Romulus and King Numa Pompilius achieved godlike worship and high esteem from their fellow Romans. While both highly important and respected figures in Rome’s history, the personalities and achievements of King Romulus and King Numa Pompilius are complete opposites of one another. Despite the differences found in each king and of their rule over Rome, both Romulus and Numa Pompilius have a tremendous influence in the prosperity and expansion of Rome in its early days.
The fall of the Roman Republic was an event that forever changed the face of the Roman world. It ushered in a new age of dictatorship. Men like Cicero did not want people such as Caesar to become dictators. His letters record the events of the day and his opinions of what was happening, and his thoughts on the events of that era. Cicero felt that the Republic fell because of Caesar’s lust for power, and it was his obligation as a Roman to do his best to challenge his ideas on changing the Republic into dictatorship. He worked diligently until his death to exact change in Rome.

The first Roman emperor, Augustus brought a huge change to Roman life and art in 27 B.C.E. The statue, Head of an Old Man, created between 25 B.C.E to 10 C. E displays the artistic change in physical form which reflects the social and political change of that time. The old man’s short hair, furrowed brow, wrinkled face, and deep bags under his eyes showed a portrait of hard life and hard work unlike the previous portraits of young well-muscled men in their prime. The Head of an Old Man reflected Augustus’s emphasis on moral reforms and hard work during his rule.
Overall, ancient Rome was responsible for the evolution of new building styles through taking pre-existing styles (mainly the Greeks and Etruscans) and developing them into bigger and bolder approaches to building. This was done through discovering the full potential of the arch, the combination of different orders of columns and the creation of a new one and the extended use of concrete. As such this allowed Rome to show its strength in more ways than conquering other civilizations. It also displays how Rome enhanced the architecture and gave it good footings to move on in the future.
The Column of Antoninus Pius was a Roman triumphal column dedicated to honor the Roman emperor Antoninus Pius and his wife Faustina the Elder by his successors, co-emperors Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus, in 161 A.D. The column alone was 14.75 meters high and 1.90 meters in diameter, which was composed, of red granite, with no reliefs on the column like other triumphal columns such as those of Trajan and Marcus Aurelius. The column itself has been lost to history, however the base expresses iconography that art historians are still studying and interpreting today. The main components of the base of the column contain two funerary decursio sides, and the depiction of the apotheosis of Antoninus Pius and Faustina the Elder, the decursio and apotheosis depict two separate but equally important styles and motifs.
The sculpture of Augustus of Primaporta shows the importance of Greek steal and Roman style. The art style is very similar but there is a specific difference between each culture that makes themselves special. The sculpture has very dramatic details of the man which is very similar to how Greek style is like for their sculpture. Augustus is a very powerful man and seen as a respectable man to the Romans. Another style that is very similar to the Greek is the posture and the body proportion of Augustus. He seems very sports like the man with this feature.
The Colosseum, one of Rome’s most famous structures, is located east of the Roman Forum in Piazza del Colosseo in Rome, Italy. As a gift to the Roman people, Emperor Vespasian of the Flavian dynasty commissioned the Colosseum around AD 70-72. Titus, Emperor Vespasian’s son and successor, opened it officially in AD 80. The Colosseum is able to hold roughly 50,000 spectators, making it the largest amphitheater in Rome. The Colosseum is a symbol of how advanced Romans were in architecture and building. This monument represents strength, power, cruelty and violence. Thousands of people, most commonly criminals and professional fighters, even animals, have been killed inside the walls of the Colosseum.
The primary function of monumental portraits in Ancient Rome was to honor political figures of power through repeating social and political themes. The Romans expressed these themes through a form of “realism”. Relics of this era were found depicting the elderly conservative nobility that lived through civil disruptions and war, elaborately individualized through detail of the face expression. Through the features of grimacing heaviness, wrinkles, and effects of old age, the Romans were able to express the reality of their political situation felt by the people whose faces were sculptured into stone. Furthermore, Nodelman discusses the use of sculpture portraits to depict the ideology behind Roman conservative aristocracy. Artists would portray the virtues of gravitas, dignities, and fides, through the use to physical expression and symbolic meaning, rather than through words. A statue of Augustus, for instance, displays the militaristic, powerful, godly perception of the conservative ideology through the use of symbolic detail. The decorative, rich, military outfit on Augustus, represents the power of the military and Augustus’s role as imperator in it. The freely held masculine arm and pointing gesture towards the horizon are Rome’s expanding dreams, clashing with the overall powerful and sturdy stance of the body. The “Equestrian Statue of Marcus Aurelius” was one of the lucky bronze pieces from Ancient Rome. It was lucky because the Ancient Romans often melted their bronze creations to make new ones. While this helped supply artists with material for new statues, the melting of statues has left modern cultures without knowledge of possibly hundreds of Ancient Rome’s finest pieces. Thankfully this statue survived is now at the Museo Capitolino in Rome, where it is an inside exhibit to keep safe from the harsh elements and pollution.
