The block chain is really important to preventing double-spending. Let's say a bad guy pays you five bitcoins for your favorite pokemon game. Then, let's say Satoshi finds a block, which has a lot of stuff in it, including a record saying you got 5 bitcoins from the bad guy. Now, here is where the bad guy gets to work. He's going to start from the block just before Satoshi's new block and then look for the next one. He's going to include everyone else's trade (which we can call a transaction) except for the one saying he paid you, and instead put in one saying he paid someone else those bitcoins. The case that was provided in the Stanwick textbook provided information on the Madoff Ponzi scheme which is said to be the largest of Ponzi schemes in the world. This case was a very interesting case. It showed how Bernard Madoffs massive falsehood created disaster for around 13,600 clients. The impact from Madoff did not end with his clients being impacted but also people far and in between. Madoffs Ponzi scheme was controlled through his company that consisted of his family being the head of the company, friends, and employees. This scheme was a result for the recession that hit in 2008. The two sons of Madoff that were top employees claimed to have no connections with the Ponzi scheme.
During the Gilded Age, several Americans emerged as leaders in many fields such as, railroads, oil drilling, manufacturing and banking. The characterization of these leaders as “robber barons” is, unfortunately, nearly always correct in every instance of business management at this time. Most, if not all, of these leaders had little regard for the public or laborers at all and advocated for the concentration of wealth within tight-knit groups of wealthy business owners.

The Silk Road did not begin trade, but the Silk Road did end up expanding its extent and the connections that were made were by mostly merchants who ended up changing the world more than the political or religious leaders in that time period. The Silk Road was actually made up of two routes: one that connected the Eastern Mediterranean to Central Asia and the other one that went from Central Asia to China. The Silk Road also involved sea routes: Some of the goods reached Rome through the Mediterranean Sea, and goods that came from Central Asia were sent across the Pacific to Japan .For a very long time in the world, silk was only produced in China because only the Chinese could make it. Bitcoins function as a completely anonymous form of digital currency. They allow people to make peer-to-peer transactions without ever making contact with the individual or exchanging any type of personal information (Zetter par. 6). This allows for quick worldwide transactions but also allow for more criminals to access an account. Since Bitcoins are a digital currency, they are kept and traded completely online. This digital currency functions mainly on the “Deep Web”, which is a part of the internet where many hidden illegal activities take place. To access the Deep Web, all one needs is software (Grossman par. 1-5). This is the area in which Bitcoins thrive since it is hard to regulate what happens on the Deep Web.

This seems to be a very pessimistic technique on the outside, but as I said before, any person can be a thief; an old lady, a religious man, or a student. Controlling from the inside, for example limiting cash, mandating dual signatures on business checks or accepting invoices reduce the opportunity for fraud to happen drastically. 7 Bigger enterprises have delicate areas such as “information security areas; video surveillance of sensitive areas, key control, clear employment policies, etcetera serve to limit temptation; the possibilities are limited only by the imagination and budget” (Larson, 1985).
Canada reached its utmost population rate in 2013, with 15,000 inmates; this is a drastic increase of 75% in the past decade. Incarceration rates are rapidly increasing as crime rates decrease. Upon release, former prisoners have difficulty adapting into society and its social norms. Criminologist, Roger Graef states that, "the vast majority of inmates, the loss of local connections with family, job, and home sentences them again to return to crime." Prisoners often result in lethargy, depression, chronic apathy, and despair, making them ultimately rigid and unable to assimilate back into the public. Depression, claustrophobia, hallucinations, problems with impulse control, and/or an impaired ability to think, concentrate, or remember are experienced by prisoners who are isolated for a protracted amount of time; research has indicated that prisons can cause amenorrhea, aggressive behaviour, impaired vision and hearing, weakening of the immune system, and premature menopause. With the lack of system programs, the constant violence, and the social isolation, the prison system fails to prepare prisoners for reintegration to society. Prisons do not provide the proper structural functionalism to rehabilitate former long-term prisoners into society.

As mentioned earlier money laundering is the process of hiding profits from illegal criminal activities. The major goal of these criminal activities is to make as large of a profit as possible. The money laundering process is very important to these criminals because it allows them to enjoy their profits without revealing the source. When one of these activities generates large profits, the group involved must find a way to disguise the funds without attracting attention towards themselves. The way they accomplish this is by moving the funds to an indiscrete place where they are less likely to attract lots of attention.
