General surgeons have an incredible impact on the world every single day. Surgeons constantly save countless lives and leave a lasting impact on the people they help. The surgeries they perform give people their lives back. Surgeons get to watch the people who came in walk out a completely different person who now has a better life because of the work they’ve done. General surgery is one of the hardest, but most rewarding careers there is. It takes a lot of hard work and perseverance. It can be stressful at times but it’s also inspiring, motivating and exciting. Typically, a surgeon’s day at the hospital starts around 6:45 AM. They round on patients and perform surgeries all day. Somedays they’re done by 3:00 PM, other days by 5:30 PM, and some days, they don’t get home until even later (Schulman NP). They work quickly under pressure and must keep up with the evolution of the medical world. Aspiring general surgeons first need to receive a bachelor’s degree of their choice and then either a Medical Degree (M.D.) or a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.), which is a doctor that places an emphasis on the whole body and tries not to use as much medicine (Physicians and Surgeons NP). The majority of surgeons acquire an M.D. while in medical school. After medical school, general surgeons must complete a three to seven year residency which is where medical school graduates work under the guidance of a more experienced surgeon. Once residency is finished, the general surgeon is licensed, something that all states require.
