The beginning process of digestion starts as pizza enters the gastrointestinal tract through the mouth, where the oral cavities begin mechanically breaking down pizza by the cutting, ripping, and grinding actions of the teeth. As the pizza breaks down it is mixed with saliva; salvia contains salivary amylase, this converts the starches in carbohydrates into simple sugars. Therefore, as your saliva and rolling motion of the tongue turns the pizza into a soft, pliable ball called a bolus. As the bolus slides down into your throat (pharynx), this allows for you to swallow. Within the occurrence through the breakdown of complex molecules into a simpler one just took place, which is the chemical digestion accomplished by enzymes.

Digestive juices are produced daily in the amount of about 2 to 3 quarts, which could explain the gurgling noises heard at times. As food enters, the gastric juices are then released and begin working on proteins. the salivary amylase continues working in your stomach. Within the action of the gastric juices are helped by the churning in the stomach walls. The semiliquid food is called chyme, as the chyme leaves the stomach through the pyloric sphincter, as it acts as the gatekeeper. This allows a small squirt of chyme into the duodenum from time to time. Pizza takes around 2-4 hours to leave your stomach. For instance, when making pizza for my family I make a thin crust, therefore, I am able to determine the amount of dough being used, using a thin base of fat-free/sugar-free pizza sauce, a thin layer of fat-free mozzarella cheese, vegetables, and a small amount of meat. Therefore, pizza made at home, I am able to utilize the ability of how many carbohydrates, fats, and sugars are used to a healthy snack. However, when going to a pizza restaurant usually you do not have the option to request fat-free/sugar-free sauce, light mozzarella cheese, or the way you would like to have your pizza cooked. Furthermore, you are not able to calculate and control the amount of carbohydrates, sugars, and fats being used to make the pizza at a pizza restaurant. Which is the reasoning why I believe that pizza can be both a healthy and a nonhealthy
