The author of “The Beautiful and Damned,” F. Scott Fitzgerald, was born on September 24, 1896, in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was born Francis Scott Key after his second cousin, who wrote the “Star-Spangled Banner.” His parents are Mary McQuillan, a wholesale grocer from an Irish-Catholic family, and Edward Fitzgerald, a salesman for Procter & Gamble. When he was 13, Fitzgerald went to the St. Paul Academy, where his first piece of writing appeared in print: a detective story published in his school newspaper. He went to the Newman School, a Catholic preparatory in New Jersey, where he met Father Sigourney Fay. Fay believed in Fitzgerald and encouraged him to continue writing.
