In the article “Idiot Nation”, Michael Moore states that America is falling behind in education compared to other countries around the world. Moore gives examples of how Americans could not figure out how to solve the simplest school problems in their heads, or had a reading proficiency past a fourth-grade level (Moore, 121-40). Compared to one of the world’s best education system, South Korean students excel in science and mathematics (Alters, 4). President Barack Obama states that the American education system needs to be fixed in a way to become like South Korea to solve the problems that are currently happening (Park, 1). To do well on his or her college entrance exam, a student is required to start school from six o’clock in the morning and end school at around four o’clock in the afternoon (Issue, Online video clip). After that, they attend hagwon, which is a “private, after-school educational center with classroom and instructors” that their parents paid for and finish going home at around midnight (Yi, 190I). During tutoring, students have a chance to asks tutors additional questions on particular subjects that they are confused about; furthermore, students cram in the materials that help them do well on their tests and college entrance exams (Issue, Online video clip). Nevertheless, students in South Korea are learning the same technique as American schools, making students know what to answer on a test. Ever since funding became an option for students to use for college tuition, college enrollees, and re-enrollment rates have an increase (Singell, 1). However, some students in America attend a college or a university for the sake of entertainment due to boredom and seeing their peers going to college. Because of those reasons, these students are taking advantage of what financial aid has to offer them. Some schools’ policy for dropping out of courses is way too generous for college students.
