The American Dream as Adam’s would define it is dying if not already dead. Ability and Achievement are still important factors in being successful in American society however in modern times such things as where people are from and how much your parents make are starting to matter more and more in determining the course of young American lives. Such things as the gender pay gap prove America still hasn’t moved forward in aspects of equality pertaining to the financial success of the masses. Also young Americans are starting to realize they will be plagued with student loans only growing for years to come past graduation and affecting retirement options. The Gender pay gap has been a problem for years but in 1960 it was projected to be equal by modern times however as we all know that isn’t true(AAUW.org, 2017). The American dream is supposed to be based on a person’s “Ability and Achievement” but if this is true why is there still a twenty percent gap between the earnings of males and females in the same profession last year(AAUW.org, 2017)? Private insurance companies will stop insuring someone after they beat tough sickness’ like cancer leaving that person uninsured and without many options effectively killing their dream(theatlantic.com, 2017). Without the ability to pay for insurance anymore or health care you’re left to struggle one example James Tartamella owner of a small business went bankrupt after two survived encounters with cancer rendering him uninsured and with a failing business all due to something beyond his control(theatlantic.com, 2017). This shows that regardless of ambition or “ability” you can be pushed down by large companies such as insurance which at the same time shows the broken healthcare system and its effect on the American dream as Adams describes
