The American Dream is known to give people opportunity and a chance for a fuller life, filled with equality. The American Dream is what thousands of people have come to America for. But what if the American Dream isn’t all it is cracked up to be? In the United States, we are told if you work hard you will see the benefits and get the rewards you deserve. In some cases that is true, but for people who aren’t white males, that statement falls short. Our structural mobility, which is the movement up or down the social class ladder due to the structure of society more than the actions of individuals, has been changed a lot over the years. One of the biggest examples is the fact that we have a black president. Racism has lowered immensely over time, blacks are given much more opportunity today than they were in the past because the structure of society has formed to realized blacks are people too and property or any less than white men. At the same time there is still discrimination towards blacks. There are statistics that show how more white sounding names on resumes get hired than blacks sounding names. People who are of color who get pulled over have much more fear than whites because, according to social media, they are usually the ones who get …show more content…

I also believe for many people it is very hard to reach the American Dream. With racism, discrimination and poverty put into the equation, it makes it difficult to achieve the American Dream easily. The American Dream is about equality and freedom for everyone, and our country doesn’t have that. As hard as we try, there will always be discrimination of some sort and certain races will be treated better than other races just because people view them differently instead of giving everyone an equal chance. The American Dream is what everyone wants and fights for, but with the inequality in our country, it will never be achievable for most
