The words goth and emo while extremely similar are very different. The word goth is short for the full word of gothic and today means somebody who dresses in dark colors mostly black. The word emo is short for emotional and most commonly used to refer to teenagers that will dress in dark colors and is usually associated with depression for that group. The differences usually appear in the age groups, clothing style, and history in various media

Firstly, the age groups for the association of the words emo and goth vary greatly. The word gothic is most often used to apply to young adults or adults. Most adults that dress in a gothic fashion do so because they want to and are not always necessarily trying to rebel unlike teenagers that are associated

One favorite representation of the gothic clothing style in media is “The Addams Family”. In “The Addams Family” characters such as Morticia Addams are frequently seen in black clothing, have a pale complexion, black hair, and wear darker shades of makeup. Wednesday Addams is also seen wearing the same dark colors and has the same pale complexion that is now so often associated with gothic culture. Another aspect of gothic culture in this movie is the way the house is decorated in the film. In the film, the house is also shown to be decorated in the same types of dark colors as the family is dressed in. Some could argue that goth culture only extends to the fashion aspect while others may argue that it can extend to different areas such as literature, architect, and fashion. A good example of gothic literature is any works written by Edgar Allan Poe. The representation of emo teens in the media is also very extensive. Emo teens in media are usually shown to be the outcast of society, are bullied by their peers, and usually harm themselves or others. In the popular television series “South Park” the emo kids are often seen mutilating themselves and are exceedingly depressed. In the popular Netflix, original movie “Death Note” the main character Light Turner can be described as Emo. In the movie Light is bullied by his peers, dresses in dark colors, and harms those around him by killing them. Therefore, Light Turner can be accurately described as
