Caleb Nogle Ms. Henderson CRW November 23, 2017 Cultural and Significant events of the 80s The 1980’s were a time of rock and pop with Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, and Prince’s music. It was also a time of fun with the release of many movies, shows, strange fashion and video games that lead up to the modern day equivalent of them. It was also a time of disaster with the oil spill of Exxon Valdez, the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, the protest of Tiananmen Square, and the discovery of the hole in the ozone layer. A lot of good things also came out of the 80s such as the fall of the Berlin Wall, the end of the Soviet Afghan war, which both lead up to the fall of the Soviet Union in the early 90s. Computers were becoming used by common people and the internet was developing. The internet was also first invented on January 1, 1983. Although it was slow and difficult to use, it helped create the fast and easy to use internet that we use today, and it took on a more noticeable form in the 90’s. On November 3, 1985 Windows 1.0 was released. Although it was also difficult to use, slow, frustrating, and ended up failing, it still ended up to help create the backbone of the future’s fast and easy to use operating systems that we use today, and the later versions of windows eventually became the most popular operating system. Walkmans and boomboxes became popular in the 1980s. “Sony’s mobile audio device revolutionized how we listen to music. It provided us the luxury of hearing whatever we wanted and at any volume, which was a serious breakthrough at the time.”
