Thanksgiving Fruit Salad

Every year during Thanksgiving families across the United States dig into turkey, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie. These foods are most common amongst families including mine, however the one food my family has always enjoyed during Thanksgiving is fruit salad. This may sound weird because we are so accustomed to the unhealthy foods of gravy and pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving, but the deliciousness of many fruits combined fits just right in. Ever since I was a little kid my older brother Tyler and I was lucky enough to make the fruit salad for my family. From my child hood I learned that I should wear clothes that can get stains on because the chances I didn’t spill something on my clothes was as good as me hitting the lottery. Once I got my clothes on I always choose to eat something because Tyler and I used to get hungry and one year there wasn’t enough fruit left to make a whole bowl of fruit salad for my family. After we are prepared we gathered all of the fruits and made sure we had the correct amounts. To speed things up and make it easier to make my mom always bought most of the fruits in a can or jar. When we were kids we had to use the handheld can opener so my brother and I hands would feel like we just hiked up to Mt. Everest using just a rope. We had to open up the fuzzy peaches, the smooth pears, and the spiky pineapple. Once we got the electric can opener it made it so much easier on our hands. My mom would buy cherries in the jar so we wouldn’t have to worry about removing all of the stems for the cherries. We always had to wipe off the jar cap and then use our shirts to open up the jar because neither of us were too strong to open up the jars at the time. The fresh fruits that mom would buy would be the sour grapefruit, the juicy oranges, the mushy grapes, and the granny apples. I threw rock while my brother through paper and I had lost. However just like every person who plays and loses, when they do lose they call for best two of three, and that’s exactly what we did. After a tie I had one the second round. It was the third round and I knew if I lost I would have to live another year knowing I had to cut on that ugly green cutting board.
