In the real world today, technology has advanced extremely that we do not notice it. With this technology, we have a problem which is people are addicted to electronics such as their phone. The majority of people today uses technology to find information or to chat with a friend. One addiction that people have is texting and driving, which can harm to people and yourself. Also, people do not realize what health problems it can cause. Even though technology is helpful to us, it can also cause trouble to us. We need to limit our technology use to help prevent these causes. Every day, people will be on their phones texting, calling people, and surfing the web. When they are doing this, they can cause trouble. One issue is that people are texting and driving at the same time. Texting and driving is a dangerous action to do and it can cause harm to yourself and others. There are many car accidents due to texting and driving. Also, there are many deaths from people due to this action. In the past, “there have been 341,000 motor vehicle crashes in 2013 that involved texting” (Schumaker). In the Huffington Post, they did research on what being on your phone can do. Looking at your phone greatly could strain your eyes to get worse, which can cause blindness (Holmes). When you cannot see well, you always have to wear glasses just to do everyday occupations such as reading or driving. Also, they said that being on your device may wreck your spine (Holmes). The cell phone provider known as AT&T has produced several commercials to show the dangers of texting and driving. These are designed to grab people’s attention and to touch them in a small place in there heart to the point that they no longer feel the need to pick up their phone in the car. They stress over and over the dangers of reading just one text. There have even been safety precautions placed in teens vehicles that record them as well as the road while they are driving to catch any of this distracted behavior. As Americans have seen an increase in the amount of texting and driving there have been several of the 50 states that have put laws in place to help try and put a reduction on the amount of fatalities. The devastating part about this kind of distraction is that nearly every person that has owned a cell phone has picked it up at some point while they are driving to make a phone call or send a quick text. They have seen the commercials and they know the hurt that it has caused many families loosing someone they love, but we still to do it anyways. What would one want to be their last word on earth? LOL? Drivers who text and drive very well may be allow their last words to be just that. Arizona has no law regarding texting while driving, with no law in place the act is not regulated. The result is an increase in accidents causing multiple fatalities every year. Statistics have proved that texting and driving is extremely dangerous and has led to many accidents that have ended in fatality. There are states in our nation where texting bans are in place and the accident rate has dramatically decreased.
The sun begins to creep up in the sky. The birds begin their song of the day. It’s a great day for a road trip. The driver of the vehicle receives a text message. He pulls his phone out of his pocket and looks at it for five seconds. At this point he is driving 55mph and goes the length of a football field without looking at the road. He takes his hands off the wheel to reply back and simultaneously collides with the semi-truck that merged onto the road while the driver was looking at the text message. The driver of the car dies on impact. It’s not a great day. Nine drivers are killed every day in America by texting and driving (Shumacher). This action increases the risk of a crash by a multiplier of two.
One day Chandler Gerber 23, of Bluffton collided with an Amish buggy back in April of 2012. A three year old boy and a five year old girl were killed. A 17 year old boy who was in critical condition died several days later. Chandler was sending a text that said “ I love you” to his wife when he caused the accident. Drivers who were texting were 23.2 times more likely to crash to those who weren’t texting (Cell Phones and Texting). The increasing amount of crashes caused from texting and driving and growing and becoming more of a problem. Distracted driving is an increasing problem in the United States resulting in many accidents, but a solution to the problem would be banning cellphones while driving.
Most of the drivers are likely to mix up driving and messaging from their cell phones while driving regardless of the laws standing on the issues, and danger posed to them. A majority of those drivers engaging in this act do not contemplate the possible detrimental effects from their actions. Research has indicated that texting while driving contributes to road accidents significantly. This situation is sufficiently bad to the extent that there are more accidents caused by messaging while driving than those caused by drunken driving (Fumento n.p.). From the foregoing statements, this essay seeks to support the laws, which outlaws texting while driving by highlighting how dangerous it is for drivers to massage while driving.
Across the globe family and friends are losing their loved ones to fatal texting and driving accidents. These days, many strive to be connected with the world and their friends by using mobile devices. The problem is that numerous people tend to do so at bad times.
