Tesla Motors is a California-based maker of electric cars, as well as electric vehicle powertrain components, and a leader in the production of Lithium-ion battery packs. The three current product lines are:
* The Tesla Roadster, the first highway-capable and all-electric sports vehicle * The Model S sedan, a lower priced vehicle that targets mid-level consumers * The Model X, an electric crossover/SUV that blends an SUV with a minivan Tesla also provides an expanding series of charging stations for the Model S (most recently 119 in North America, 76 in Europe, and 26 in Asia). He's skilled at partnering with other companies to develop new technology for them. These include Toyota and Daimier AG, which have also become investors in Tesla (Levi, 2013). Tesla is a small and focused company, nimble enough to respond quickly, and without the debt and pension burdens of the Big Three automakers (Levi, 2013). They were able to redesign the old Fremont NUMMI factory with state-of-the-art assembly lines. Customers look favorably on Tesla for design and innovation, and applaud its mission to reduce harm to the environment done by gasoline engines and emissions. However, it is burdened by being thought of as producing cars only for the wealthy. In addition, a spate of car and battery fires may have hurt its reputation for reliability. Tesla should try harder to get the message out that its research, investment and development ultimately serves the purpose of increasing the affordability of electric vehicles to the general population.
