Television Becoming a Threat
A simple television can change a person’s thinking, opinion, attitude, and behavior. Television allows viewers to learn and interact with ideas from different places within a short time span. Television has brought entertainment to the homes of many and filled homes with charm and happiness. For many years television attribute to most peoples lifestyle, until television got in the way of people’s learning. Recently, debates have occurred on whether television is making a person smarter or negatively affecting the way they learn academically. One of many concerns are the youth who possibly are becoming victims of television’s damage.
Television is the gateway to using other mass media, like video games, that are seen by people of all ages. However, over the years violence has been seen frequently and targets youth, when they play video games or watch videos or shows. From ages 12 and under, children try to find their identities and violence greatly appeals to them at this influential age. Violence in television does not appear with severe consequences, and this induces some youth to do violence. Although violence in television is common, youth who are being exposed to violence have difficulty identifying fantasy versus reality, showing aggressive behavior, as a result youth are becoming addicted to watching television that is messing with their sleep.
It is with the help of many researchers that have proven that television affects youth in their everyday activities. Sue Aran and Miquel Rodrigo from “the Notion of violence in television fiction: Children’s interpretation” write “ Furthermore,… the use of video games, in which violence is very frequently shown, has only increased the concern about its effects, such as desensitization to real violence.” Violence is being recognized in the minds of youth less of an awareness because violence is demonstrated constantly that after a time it defeats the purpose of self-awareness. At a young age, a children is at stage in which is learning what is wrong and right. The violence being shown is being displayed to be less wrong it moves the children to try to do violence affecting their academic learning.
