Teddy’s approach to foreign policy began during his term as Assistant Secretary of the Navy. Teddy believed that the government should use our resources to help achieve economic justice as well as social justice. When the country faced a coal shortage in the fall of 1902 because of a strike so coal miners were on in Pennsylvania, the President thought he should do something about this. The economy was very poor before he took office so he made the decision that pursuing the nation's natural resources was the best way to improve our country. Teddy’s domestic program included a promise to battle large industrial combinations, which threatened to hold up trade. In 1902, his government brought a successful suit under the previously ineffective Sherman Antitrust Act against the Northern Securities Company. Teddy also stopped a prolonged coal strike, using a combination of negotiation tactics to stop the strike and gain a small pay raise for the coal …show more content…
The project turned out to be a disaster, and the French were dieing to sale the canal. Then Teddy offered to buy it, the French were more than willing to give it to him. But, Congress was less eager to spend the money on the Canal. In order to make things so a little faster, took a hand to organize a revolution that overthrew the government of Panama and replaced it with a nation who had a constitution like The United States. Because of Teddy’s actions, the rest of his life would be a waste. This caused the economy to drop because of the price for the canal, but to continue building the project, many jobs were
After the assassination of President McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt inherited a growing empire when he took office in 1901. The U.S. had annexed Hawaii in 1898 and Spanish-American War granted the U.S. control of the Philippines. It also led the U.S. to establish a protectorate over Cuba and grant territorial status for Puerto Rico. By taking on the Philippine Islands as an American colony after the Spanish-American War he had ended the U.S.'s isolation from international politics. Theodore Roosevelt believed that nations should pursue a strenuous life and do their part to maintain peace and order. It was also a belief that civilized nations had the duty of modernizing the barbarous ones. He also pushed for a bigger army and navy and by the end of his presidency he had built the U.S. Navy into a major force at sea.

After attending Harvard and graduating in 1880

Theodore Roosevelt was born on October 27, 1858, in New York City, to Theodore Roosevelt Sr. and Martha Roosevelt (Unites States. National Park Service. History: Theodore Roosevelt: Life). As a child, Teddy was burdened with an “acute” asthma, his eyesight was horrible, having to wear thick glasses his whole life, and his physical stature was small and frail (Teddy Roosevelt). In the book Theodore Roosevelt by Louis Auchincloss, I learned a great deal about the twenty-sixth President of the United States of America. Former President T. Roosevelt made many accomplishments as president, and did not have a high number of scandals. Roosevelt did very well in keeping the peace between the different countries, which earned him many admirers and the coveted Nobel Peace Prize. The author’s purpose for writing Theodore Roosevelt was to tell his readers all about America’s former president, Theodore Roosevelt’s life. Louis Auchincloss did a great job at describing President T. Roosevelt’s life from Teddy’s childhood, his life before presidency, to all of Teddy’s accomplishments as president, and finally to his life after his
Teddy Roosevelt was a man who liked to creat a stir wherever he went. He loved mingling with people to boost his own self-image.He loved to impress people with his cowboyism, his collection of guns, and his pintsize spectacles. Also, Roosevelt was a direct-actionist.He wanted to keep the country moving foward and preserve his public image at the same time. He wanted to display to his supporters that he could lead the country and be a jovial person simulataneously. His public image seemed to be his first priority, and when the election of 1904 came approaching, he wanted to show that he could be a bully to smaller countries and impress his people back home.
Theodore Roosevelt may be one of the most powerful presidents that attacked Trusts1 and corporations to make them just so that everyone could prosper. Thayer, a friend of Roosevelt wrote, ". . .he took the deepest personal satisfaction in fighting the rich and the soulless corporations. . ." (Thayer). This led into the 1920's a prosperous decade in which people received "new money." Theodore Roosevelt stressed more for people to be responsible than to be autonomous, or, in other words, to help others besides helping yourself. He was able to bring two separate groups together to make a better America. He brought the Trusts that wanted the government to stay away and then the other side that wanted the government to "smash" the Trusts (Howland). There were also companies that realized that they needed the help of the government if they wanted to survive. When Theodore Roosevelt went into office he made it his mission to get everyone what they deserved, a "square deal." The square deal meant that everyone had the same equal opportunities as the next guy. Roosevelt stated, "The labor unions shall have a square deal and the corporations shall have a square deal" (Ferleger).
As president, Theodore Roosevelt pushed executive powers to new limits, arguing to raise industrial for limited government. Theodore used the executive order to increase the powers towards accomplishing his goal. Roosevelt exceeded through towards creating new powers to actualize railroad rates and setting more obstacles. “I do not believe that any President has ever had as thoroughly good a time as I have had, or has ever enjoyed himself as much” (encyclopedia.com). As president, Theodore wanted to use power to interpret the laws. Theodore was the first president to use the media to appeal to the people with constructing the political
In the end Theodore Roosevelt handled the Coal Strike of 1902 in a very intelligent manner. For the first time in American history, a president didn’t side with the business owners (David Kennedy). He also set a precedent for handling future strikes. Negotiation was now the preferred way to handle a strike (Grossman). Roosevelt said in a speech during the strike, “I speak for neither the operators nor the miners but for the general public (Grossman).” The federal government was now tasked with the responsibility of protecting the interests of the public during a strike.
President Roosevelt worked towards many different objectives throughout his 8 years of presidency. He believed in the social justice and economic opportunity of the people. For this reason, he committed himself and the government to trying to regulate big businesses and being in favor of the workers after being elected president (Doc A). One example of this taking place would be the Coal Strike of 1902. During this strike, workers demanded shorter work days, higher wages, and recognition of the union. When the coal company failed to meet the workers’ demands, the government was forced to intervene to avoid the risk of a coal shortage for the winter. The go...
After spending some time in the Dakota’s after his mother and wife’s deaths, Roosevelt decided to return to New York where he earned city commission jobs. In these jobs he started to gain attention from many Republican leaders. In 1898, President McKinley appointed Roosevelt as the Assistant Secretary of the Navy. Roosevelt soon resigns as Assistant Secretary and decides to join in the war against Spain for Cuba. In the war, Roosevelt joins the Rough Riders and becomes an instant hero at the battle of San Jan Hill. Once the war is over Roosevelt returned to New York where he becomes the governor.
After this was suggested there was not much Theodore could do. There was now nobody that could stop the flow of people wanting him for vice-president. Platt said, “Roosevelt might as well stand under Niagara Falls and try to spit the water back.” Yet although the New York committee were thinking they were getting rid of Roosevelt, the thing they didn't think about is what senator Mark Hanna did when he said, “Don't any of you realize that there is only one life between this madman and the White House?” But no one would listen to him and Teddy was nominated for vice-president. Although it was presented as a favor and a step up, Teddy easily saw through the lies and guessed the reasons. He didn't like the position of vice-president very much. He thought that he wouldn't get enough work done, and it was mostly just a title. He thought of it as a useless job. But despite his dislike for the position, Teddy plunged whole heartedly into campaigning. While McKinly sat on his porch Ohio, Roosevelt was the engine for the a tremendous locomotive. He visited twenty-four states and giving nearly seven hundred speeches. He attacked the other runners with bulldog ferocity. He built up his arguments and tore gaping holes in theirs. He was unrelenting and never stopped his

Ever since the Anthracite Coal Mine Strike of 1902, Theodore Roosevelt remained interested in the plight of the mine workers and their families. He had kept in touch
...the coal miners didn’t get a change in the way coal was weighed or official recognition of the UMW, the Progressives won this fight because their voices had been heard. Roosevelt’s arbitration in this matter linked public interest and state power, and in the process offered a progressive example for labor relations (McGerr 124).
