Ted Bundy The concept of evil is hardly ever clear cut and many would argue that people were either born evil or were, by circumstance, made evil. The decisions behind the immoral or moral actions of an individual are said to be influenced by nature or by the nurture the individual received as they were growing up. But what about individuals who don’t fall under either category?
Ted Bundy, the infamous mass murderer that killed and raped around 36 women during the mid 1970’s could be said to be one of these gray area individuals. Ted Bundy grew up believing that his mother was his sister and his grandparents were his parents because of the shame it brought his mother from having a child out of wedlock. He believed that human beings were born with evil inside of them and in order to become moral they have to learn “The Way”. In order to do this, one must consult the elders of the society, read books and study the norms of society to become wise and to learn to become morally good. His beliefs explain the nurturing of an individual and how with learning and care an individual will truly be able to become morally good. Ted Bundy, however, was raised in a stable family and although he grew up believing that his grandparents were his biological parents and his mother was his sister, it seems that he was raised in a well environment. Bundy also grew up to be quite successful and educated as he was accepted into a law school in Ohio. Ted Bundy had the opportunity to understand and learn “The Way” as he learned about the law and the norms of society. However, even through all of his nurturing and learning he still decided to harm others. He was able to learn the law so well that during his trial, he decided to represent himself instead of hiring a certified lawyer to aid him. On one hand, he was born genetically stable, meaning that he had the capacity to know right from wrong, moral from immoral, good from evil. And on the other hand, he grew up in a good home and a step-father who attempted to become a role model and father figure. He also graduated from college and went to law school and yet he still chose to kill dozens of innocent women. One would think that all of these factors would create a law abiding, morally good citizen. However, Ted Bundy grew up to be known as one of the many infamous serial killers the United States had seen.
