Teamwork as the Most Important Factor in the Development of Both Penicillin and DNA
In this essay I will be looking at the development of penicillin and
DNA, two of the major breakthroughs of the 20th century. Teamwork
played a key role in both cases but there are also other factors to
consider such as; Money, earlier research, individuals and scientific
investigations.
Teamwork was one of the most important factors which helped the
breakthrough of both penicillin and DNA. To help the development of
Penicillin Florey and Chain worked together. Even though Joseph Lister
accidentally discovered Penicillin and Fleming named Penicillin Florey
and Chain worked as a team and did most of the hard work. Florey and
Chain did a number of experiments and shared ideas; they also
developed the pure side of Penicillin. However Florey went to Russia
to spread the idea of Penicillin and did most of the business side of
the work. However in the development of DNA the teamwork shared
between Francis Crick and James Watson was rather extraordinary. They
both complimented each others work. Francis Crick knew about
biophysics and James Watson Genetics. They were also able to point out
each others mistakes and fix them. They teamwork could be described as
fun, loving ambitious, impatient mercilessly. Not only did Francis
Crick and James Watson worked together but Maurice Wilkins and
Rosalind Franklin also worked together however they fell out as they
did not like each others work and the way they worked. Francis Crick
and James Watson also involved Maurice Wilkins and Rosalind Franklin
in their work. Nevertheless team was not the only factor to help the
break through of Penicillin and DNA.
Money was also important in the development of Penicillin and DNA. To
fund the development of Penicillin the government had helped. They
gave money to make pure penicillin for the soldiers fighting in the
war. Also Florey went to the drug companies and factories for
Penicillin to be made. Florey and Chain were unable to make Penicillin
without money.
