Teaching Literacy Instruction

When teaching literacy instruction is inevitable to teach in different ways, one because according the grade level children learn different things and two because as they go through the grades they need new knowledge. In kindergarten children are starting to learn in a different way than preschool, meaning that there is more instruction and they are learning the convections of reading and writing. During this year students will have to understand several concepts such as how a book goes from top to bottom, or left to right, writing words and even compared letters. They will have to recognize the alphabet letters know the letter sounds and even write their first and last names correctly. In order for all of these to happen instruction will be based on interactive read-a-louds in order to teach listening strategies, the teacher will read books aloud to children and ask question, as well as make students think critically. In this grade teachers have higher expectations from students to display skills and competencies. This can be seen in their instruction level, in this grade children are reading more challenging picture books and well as information, and chapter books independently. Their literacy instruction level is way above and keeps accelerating. As in kindergarten there are read-a-louds in second grade but the focus is shifted a little bit, meaning that the teacher will read books that children will not be able to read on their own. Instruction will also include literacy focus groups where children will read similar books and discuss about them, and learn reading strategies such as characters, theme and events. Second graders will also have guided reading to work on spelling and orthography, decoding words and vocabulary
