I was privileged enough to get the opportunity to be a tax intern with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Atlanta, GA this spring. The beginning of my internship experience was a little different from the others because I was able to go to the National Championship in Arizona with an organization on campus. I was quite hesitant to ask for the time off because I was just an intern and I wanted to make the best impression possible. I emailed the manager that I interviewed with and after a week, he was able to get back to me with the firm’s policy. If an employee’s alma mater makes it to the national championship they are eligible for two days off. They have a “dress for your day” dress code which means you can wear jeans, wear a full suit, or whatever you feel that is appropriate for your day. So if you have an important meeting, it might be beneficial to dress nicer for this, but if you are doing work from your desk or handling more internal issues you can dress more casually. What I love so much about this office is, even though a vast majority of the employees are wearing jeans, they are still professional at all times. Professionalism is something that is very important to me. When I was busy, I was on several clients at once and trying to figure out how to manage them all. When there was nothing, there was nothing. I was told that the slowest points of an accountant’s career would be when they are an intern and when they first start out as an intern. I felt like I could be doing more when I sat at my desk for eight hours in a day and have not done anything besides make a few copies are or send an email. I understand that since I was an intern, I may not have a lot of work at all times and it wouldn’t make sense to start me on big projects when I am just going to leave in three months, but I felt like a nuisance when I walked around and asked for work and then I felt unproductive when I was just searching through eLearns to do that may or may not apply to my field of work. I realized that I would rather be so busy that I am slightly overwhelmed than just sit at my desk refreshing my email for the duration of the day. The first month was fairly slow for the entire department, but I was privileged enough to have been involved on some pretty exciting client calls that made a huge impact on my perception of the field and my long term goals in the
