Tattoos Should Be Considered a Form of Fine Art Tattoos are a form of body art and one of humanities most ancient art forms. They are an artistic and creative way to render personal feelings and beliefs into visual representations on the human body. The problem today is that many people throughout our society view tattoos negative fashion. They have been conditioned throughout time to believe that tattoos are a representation of gang members, criminal activity, and social outcasts. They refuse to see the artistic elements within the composition of a tattoo. Tattoos are artistic expressions that use all the elements of fine art and should be regarded as fine art in the art community. There are many reasons why humans get tattoos. Just as art has different styles such as classical or gothic, tattooing encompasses many different styles as well. Some tattoo artists are very famous and command a hefty price tag for their artistic expression. People travel many miles, sometimes around the globe in search of a specific tattoo artist. Creating true fine art quality tattoos really depends on the artistic freedom given to the tattooist by the subject being worked on. If there is little freedom, they become a carbon copy machine, copying stencils and other artist’s work. Some tattoo art is so good that NBA players have had to get expressed written permission from their tattoo artist to allow their art to be presented while playing a basketball game on national television. Presently, more and more tattoo artists are graduating from colleges and universities with fine art degrees. These new tattooist has studied art academically and have a full understanding of the elements of art in the composition of tattoos. They are able to use their understanding of the fine arts to render their work on living canvases. Educated tattoo artists then continue their educational journey in the art of tattooing by completing a tattoo apprenticeship. The apprenticeship teaches the artist how to properly apply tattoos in a sterile environment as well as the intricacies of the tattoo
