As a traveler not fluent in the local language you are always at a disadvantage when it comes time to eat. It is not possible to enjoy all of the local food that is available without understanding what you are ordering. This is especially true if you have food allergies, or avoid certain foods for religious or personal reasons. In the hotels and upscale restaurants you may be able to find a menu translated into English, but when you leave the hotels and try out a local restaurant or get off the beaten path the chances of the menu being translating into English get slimmer and slimmer How then does a traveler enjoy all of the wonderful food that Greece has to offer?

After a brief introduction to Greek cuisine, there are seven chapters in this book that each cover a different category of food and introduce the reader to some sample vocabulary. Practice is the most important activity when trying to learn anything and to that end each of the chapters contains a “Practice” section to practice what you have learned. The answers to each of the Practice sections are given directly below, but try to answer the questions on your own first.
Chapter 8 and 9 are special chapters on Greek wine and Greek cheese respectively. Although information about the wines and cheeses of Greece could easily fill a large book each, these two chapters provide enough information to introduce a traveler to the most popular wines and cheeses of Greece and how to recognize them on a menu. This book has been written as both a course book and a reference guide. After the menu reading course section of the book, there is a comprehensive Greek - English Glossary of more than three hundred words and dishes, enough to read almost anything on any menu in Greece.
