Throughout the Tang and Song Dynasties, there was a plethora of growth and progress developed over time. The dynasties generated a “Golden Age” for China as a whole, creating the strongest and most advanced country during that era. The Civil Service Exam was a system of examinations applied to young citizens to qualify for working in the civil service or hierarchy of that time. This examination was very important for many, as it could place not only the specific person, but their whole family into a position of the elite community. The Tang Dynasty only offering the exam to the wealthy and hierarchy, gave peasants and low-class citizens a complete disadvantage of making a change in their lifestyle and social role. As China made the transition to the Song Dynasty, the exam regulations were revised so that all social classes had the chance to partake. One of the eras of a majestic ancient civilization that has left a lasting impression upon the world of today is the Chinese Song Dynasty. Established by General Zhao Kuangyin this dynasty lasted from 960–1279 AD and brought a new stability to China after many decades of civil war, and ushered in a new era of modernization. It was divided into the Bei (Northern) and the Nan (Southern) Song periods. During the Ming dynasty, Chinese literati were educated officials and scholars (Ching 1987, 24). Many were involved with painting and calligraphy. Some were officials in the Ming government. In order to obtain a position as an official or cabinet member, a student must pass the “imperial exam.” An imperial exam is exam paper used to find the best potential for an administrative position. The government designed these exams with three levels. After the student has completed the third level, they will have an opportunity to meet the emperor in person. If the emperor were to approve the student, then the student may obtain an admintrative position in the government. Most people who took imperial exams came from a rich family (Murphey 2009, 136-137). The rich were able to afford private tutors for there children who needed to take the exam. The Sui dynasty reigned from 581 – 618 A.D. The emperor built monasteries for both Buddhism and Daoism throughout the land, and appointed Buddhist monks as his key advisors.
