I had been living in Aspen, Colorado, for about six months and writing feature stories for the local newspaper. My assignment was to find interesting locals to write about.
One day while riding down Main Street, I saw a police officer directing traffic and wondered what it would be like to be a part of a famous ski resort’s police force. I ran the idea past my editor, he waved me onward. I arranged to do a ride a long and found myself in a squad car a few days later.
I asked him about his life before Aspen and he told me about his past law enforcement experience. He then talked about his childhood and I heard a change of tone in his voice. His facial expression became sad as well. I sensed there was something else he wanted to tell me but I took him slowly down the interview path to gain his trust.

David Stark Latta is my mother's step-father, he was born on December 6, 1937 in Pontiac, Michigan and has spent most of his life here. David raised my mother and three other children from his previous marriage. Courage and determination directed by passion make Junior a very admirable character. By sympathizing with Junior, the reader feels that Junior is inspiring. An early example of when the reader pitied Junior was when his dog Oscar was shot, who Junior considered to be “a better person than any human [he] had ever known” (Alexie, 9). Oscar had been sick, and since Junior’s family did not have enough money to care for him, Oscar was euthanized. Furthermore, Junior felt defeated, saying, “A bullet only costs about two cents, and anybody can afford that” (Alexie, 14). Everyone, especially poor people, can be plagued with death and despair. From the very beginning of the story, where the reader learns that Junior had a brain disability to the dreadful way he experienced poverty, the reader sympathizes with him because they are truly sorry for him. The reader wants him to succeed, to grow, and, above all, to inspire the readers themselves. Junior becomes a hero to the reader for soaring above what his life entailed for him.

After seeing so much injustice, he finally realizes that “his” people are all people. He cannot stand working for his family’s well-being if it means taking work from another family. He ends up leaving his family to set out on a course of public action. With his rational, calm temperament, it’s no wonder he handles such inhumane treatment so well. I would speculate that he would become an effective political leader if there were to be a sequel to the story. Overall, this is a story that is completely focused on what it means to be a family, what humans need to survive, and the idea of human weakness in self-interest. Families are truly the bedrock of not only society, but humanity.
The person whom I contacted for my informational interview was Joseph Gaines. I was able to meet Mr. Gaines through a network connection I made from my co-intern at Internal Affairs Division at the Metropolitan Police Department. I chose this individual because he holds a position that I am very interested in and may like to pursue as a career goal. We met and had lunch together. At which time I was able to interview him and get some insight of his daily duties to see if this career choice would be a good fit for me. Mr. Gaines is a Senior Inspector for the Sexual Predator Unit for the United States Marshals Service. He has an overall thirty-eight years of law enforcement experience. Mr. Gaines worked for the last twenty-five years as a U.S. Marshal.
