Project discussed: Syringe exchange program. Comparative analysis

Syringe exchange program (SEP) is a very interesting project to discuss. The presentation collected information and data from multiple reports, containing many sources that show carefully integrated SEP policy and how this policy can improve the health system. It can decrease HIV/AIDS and hepatitis C incident rates or/and prevalence. Similar data was found in the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, together with other organizations in which research concludes positive effects from needle exchange programs. There were few negative findings of the SEP integrating in all the readings.

How ? Clearly, SEP alone will not decrease the HIV/hepatitis incidence rates and prevalence, but the multiple interventions that SEP provides such as supplies, referrals education and training other than the distribution of the sterile syringes, all together all will lead to maximizing the health services reaches to specific population (IDU) that normally won’t get from other agencies. In other words, it is a significant help in multiple ways. “those programs can be extremely powerful to offer these people a clean syringes and other intervention without other motivation than that we wish to save their life “.I agree indeed, to be more specific; this population (IDU). Those interventions are needed in Detroit area in particular. The studies showed that there are over 2,920 HIV cases attributed to IDU, unfortunately Michigan currently have only five programs that have been operating based on various private funds and donations, two of them are not active anymore mainly due to funding shortage.
