Symbolism is where, in a piece of writing a symbol is used to provide a deeper meaning or mean something else. Symbols can be a certain color, a relationship between characters, a food or drink, the weather, or basically anything that could stand for something else. An example of symbolism might be black or dark colors being used in writing to symbolize death, this could mean there has been a death, will be a death, or maybe it is alluding to death. Symbolism is important because it is needed for readers to understand an author’s full purpose of why they are writing. Here, Lancelot is made out to be this amazing man, “A red-cross knight forever kneeled/ To a lady in his shield, / That sparkled on the yellow field, / Beside remote Shalott” (Lines 78-81). The red cross knight symbolizes holiness, implying that Lancelot is a holy figure. Holiness is a part of the romance of Lancelot by making him this man that the women want, he is the one that women want to love. His beauty continues to be described, “His broad clear brow in sunlight glowed; / On burnish’d hooves his war horse trode; / From underneath his helmet flowed/ His coal-black curls as on he rode” (Lines 100-103). Beauty is a big part of love, so by saying that he is glowing Tennyson is making him this almost god-like person. Lancelot makes women want him, and it goes along with a theme of where people do crazy things for love and romance, in this case of making the Lady leave her room. In an article titled The Lady of Shalott, the author states “The description that Tennyson gives of the knight mixes his bold, powerful look with his chivalrous actions.” This description fits right in with the symbol of love or romance. Symbols can be interpreted many different ways. It depends on the author’s purpose, as well as the point of view of the reader. One color mentioned in one of these poems could symbolize twenty different things, it is just a matter of how one looks at it. Tennyson and Rossetti both do an amazing job of leaving these poems to a bit of interpretation, although the meaning behind each are pretty clear.
