Anthem Setting Anthem is a novella written by Ayn Rand in 1937. Anthem is set in the far future after the “Unmentionable Times” end and the human race has been reduced to basic and simple technology. The majority of the story is narrated in a hidden and forgotten tunnel under the City in which Equality 7-2521, the narrator and author, lives. The latter part of the story is written in the Uncharted Forest after Equality 7-2521 leaves the society that wouldn’t accept him or his ideas. Symbols Forest- The forest symbolizes danger and the unknown. Tunnel- The tunnel symbolizes solidarity and discovery. Light- Light symbolizes knowledge and discovery. People aren’t allowed to be different because if they’re different they could potentially be better than everyone else making them more important in society. “Dare not choose in your minds the work you would like to do when you leave the Home of the Students. That and nothing else.” (12.15) Equality 7-2521 believes that freedom is being free from other people. He believes that to be free no other person can tell you what to do, say, or think. “We are one in all and all in one.
