"Is it counterproductive for Westerners to attack sweatshops?" Personally I think that sweat shops are a necessity in some country. In the small poor country around the world they are struggling for jobs and income. When a big company Like H&M or GAP come in and create a factory or sweat shop it creates jobs for the people. In our eyes being wealthy Americans that most of our parents have minimum wage jobs or better we can look at a sweatshop or a factory and complain about the horrid working conditions and the terrible pay. For the people in those counties tho it is normal or even good. It is better to have a Job that pays little and is in bad working conditions then to not have a job and not be able to provide for your family or starve
Some of the arguments against sweatshops raised by Americans is the they take jobs away from the American people. In the job force it is becoming harder to find an open position any where. Instead of keeping the factories here the companies are shipped over seas, causing millions of job opportunities for Americans to be lost. Some arguments raised by the United Students Against Sweatshops (USAS) are the poor working conditions, low wages, long hours, and children in the factories. The damp, dark, and cold environment can depress the workers even more than they may be, causing rates in suicide to increase. Low wages is another concern USAS have. The workers barley get enough money to survive.
Sweatshops started around the 1830’s when industrialization started growing in urban areas. Most people who worked in them at the time were immigrants who didn't have their papers. They took jobs where they thought they'd have the most economic stability. It’s changed a bit since then, companies just want the cheapest labor they can get and to be able to sell the product in order to make a big profit. It’s hard to find these types of workers in developed areas so they look toward 3rd world countries. “sweatshops exist wherever there is an opportunity to exploit workers who lack the knowledge and resources to stand up for themselves.” (Morey) In third world countries many people are very poor and are unable to afford food and water so the kids are pulled out of school and forced to work so they can try to better their lives. This results in n immense amount of uneducated people unaware they can have better jobs and that the sweatshops are basically slavery. With a large amounts uneducated they continue the cycle of economic instability. There becomes no hope for a brighter future so people just carry on not fighting for their basic rights. Times have changed. 5 Years ago companies would pay a much larger amount for a product to be made but now if they’re lucky they’ll pay half, if a manufacturer doesn't like that another company will happily take it (Barnes). Companies have gotten greedier and greedier in what they’ll pay to have a product manufactured. Companies have taken advantage of the fact that people in developing countries will do just about anything to feed their families, they know that if the sweatshop in Cambodia don't like getting paid 2 dollars per garment the one in Indonesia will. All of my life I have considered myself as a person who loves children. I enjoy playing with them, helping them, and just being around them. So when I first agreed with corporations who use child labor I shocked myself completely. After examining two articles; one “The Case for Sweatshops”, by David R. Henderson, and two “Sweatshops or a Shot at a Better Life”, by Cathy Young, I came to the conclusion that in some cases when young children work under proper conditions it can keep them out of the streets and be helpful to them and their families.

Sweatshops can be found all around the world, especially in developing nations where local laws are easily corrupted: Central America, South America, Asia, and in certain places in Europe (Background on Sweatshops). The global economy should not depend on sweatshops, instead developed nations that obtain services from overseas sweatshops should improve the working conditions and provide a living wage for their workers.

The employees are paid very little, even after working long, hard hours. The supervisors of these shops are often cruel, malicious, and brutal. However, despite the push to recognize the physical abuse that is inflicted on these children, the psychological effects can possibly be the bigger problem that the children are facing.

In the nineteenth century, only selected problems that were occurring in sweatshops were talked about; causing problems to create sweatshop exhibits. Puerto Rico was the first to have an export garment zone in the industry, which later fell causing women to migrate to New York City to work in garment shops. In the 1960’s New York City’s garment industry began to have decline, nut with the migration of immigrant women it allowed for lower pay to happen, which later helped New York’s garment shops to rise again.
This treatment towards workers is detrimental not only to sweatshop owners, but to the company employing them. Perhaps when more consumers understand the conditions workers who make their product are in, companies would take action as their profits would decrease. It is a fact that workers are put in inhumane conditions for miniscule amounts of pay, yet 80% of a country's revenue depend on these workers. If workers are such an important aspect of a country’s economy, they should be properly treated. Without workers, there is no economy, thus sweatshops are not needed in the supply
