The Things They Carried What is surrealism? Surrealism is a 20th century avant-garde movement in art and literature that released the creative potential of the unconscious mind. When surrealism is used by an author we can’t tell if it is real or it is exaggerated. Surrealism is used in the story The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien. He writes his stories as if he wants things to go one way but they go another way. In O’Brien’s two stories, “How to Tell a True War Story” and “Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong”, he reflects the concept of surrealism. In the chapter “How to Tell a True War Story” Rat Kiley’s friend, Curt Lemon, dies and Rat writes Curt’s sister a letter. In that letter Rat was telling Curt’s sister how much he loved him and that he was a hero. Two months pass and she never writes back. O’Brien says, “A true war story is never moral” (65) and “If a story seems moral, do not believe it” (65). A true war story sometimes can’t be believed because some of the most unbearable parts are true but some of the normal parts aren’t. In "How to Tell a True War Story" when Curt Lemon died Rat seems to imagine it the way he would've wanted it to go. In "Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong" when Fossie brings over his girlfriend in my opinion is made up because in reality it would be hard to get your girlfriend to a war. In the story the author made it seem so easy by just flying her in. They stories tell us to not always believe what we hear about things in Vietnam. The Things They Carried is a book about men who go to war. Each chapter is in a different guys perspective and tells their stories. Some may be made up and some may be real, we will never know. The two stories are unique because when I read them, it makes me feel like I am there right next to all the characters. The surrealism was used in a very detailed
