The Miracle of Team Management and Group Leadership All-star teams fail because they rely solely on the individual’s talent and are not compromised with the team. The whole is more important than each individual piece. This philosophy is emphasized by coach Herb Brooks in the movie The Miracle to lead the US hockey team to win the 1980 winter Olympics’ gold medal in a time where there was a crisis of confidence and trust in America. Tuckerman’s forming stage continues when he asks each player where they come from and who they represent. Each payer answers by telling the school the city where they were from and the college they were affiliated. Interdependence was very low, to the point where each individual was working individually in some function within the team, resembling more a pooled interdependence (Stewart, Manz, and Sims 32). The team understands that if they want to win against the soviets, they need to stay together, be creative with the plays and be effective. The team members are working synergistically to accomplish collective objectives (86). There are some bumps on the way as they lose the exhibition match against the Soviets. In the same game, they lose an important player with a knee injury who is at risk of missing the Olympic Games. Even though the initial outcome from the exhaustive physical and psychological training performed to his team, Coach Brook knew his team have the potential and that the training cycle that they have gone through the past six months have improved team potential and effectiveness.
